Why do you have to pay to upgrade your drivers.

I recently had to reinstall my OS now many of my drivers are gone and all I could find are sites that want to sell me updates for my drivers

Which OS and what drivers are we talking about?

I've never had to purchase a driver or driver update.

I suspect that you are looking at sites trying to sell you updater software, don't buy it it isn't needed.
(They often don't work anyway and are often a tech scam asking you to phone their help line so they can charge you more, and then install who knows what on your computer).

Windows Update will install most required drivers, and update most as new versions become available.

If it doesn't update a particular specialist driver then your computer/hardware manufacturer will have any needed for the hardware, any needed for other propriety programmes can be downloaded from the programme developers/distributors website.

I agree. If someone is asking you to pay for a driver, that tells me 2 things. (1) Someone is trying to rip you off or (2) your hardware is old and the maker has gone out of business and shutdown their download page. If the latter, that means someone else is "hosting" those drivers on their own website. And running a website takes money.

Yeah, if you tell us your OS and the hardware models you are trying to find drivers for we might be able to help.
