Hi, I'm interested in going into Secure Data Storage as a business. Would anyone be able to give me some guide lines as to what is involved in terms of equipment and expertise required. Any and all info will be highly appreciated. thanks
To start from scratch would be a huge, and expensive undertaking requiring lots of formal training and investment. You would definitely need to be an expert in data management. Running any business successfully requires business management skills. You would need at least two complete data centers at least several miles apart (or better yet, a couple 1000 miles apart) to ensure your users always without fail, have access to their data. One is not good (robust) enough to ensure your clients have access to their data 24/7/365 and in the event of flood, fire, power outage, Earthquake, burglary/vandalism or simple equipment failure. This requires multiple layers of redundancy. You will also need to be a top notch security expert. You will need lots of insurance, perhaps bonding, and you will need to instill trust in your clients so they know their data is safe. My advice - go to school to learn the technical skills and the business management skills - talk to the school counselors about your goals.
Your post is not pertinent. He is not seeking a storage provider, he is interested in becoming a storage provider.
Thank you very much for the information Digerati. I have the business management end sorted out as I already run a couple of businesses. I have a number of years experience in in IT, but only in hardware repair and Networking. I can obviously hire other expertise so I'm not too worried about that area in particular. What I would like more info on, if possible, is how the business actually works and what kind of equipment one needs etc. Much appreciated!!!
Well, that is really beyond the scope of this type forum. See if this helps: "How Cloud Storage Works".
