    Hey

The red led is the optical digital out, as it uses the same jack.
Did it always have the light on inside??

If not, then it is now selected to digital out.

When you went to sound in preferences, what devices are listed?

On my mac, when I have no speakers connected, it shows 'Internal Speaker' on that list.

I think what must be happening is that your mac thinks there is an optical cable into the jack.
Try pushing a few different jack plugs in and out and see if you can get it to realise there is nothing there.
Alternatively, you may need to contact applecare if it's under warrantee, as the apple support forums suggest it's not an uncommon problem :/
