Monitor Problem

    We have a 2005 Dell Dimension 5150 which is still giving sterling service, but we have at last decided to replace our old CRT monitor with a 20” Acer X203HB LCD monitor with a 1600 x 900 specification.

    When I set the display properties in the control panel. The maximum I can set the screen resolution to is 1280 x 720 pixels which is obviously below the maximum capability of the screen – I believe our computer just has graphics built into the motherboard and uses the Intel 82945G Express Chipset family driver running XP SP3.

    We don’t play games and rarely watch films on the computer – is it worth / possible to buy a graphics or other card that would be compatible with the computer, and would this show a great deal of difference in the quality of the image displayed ?

    Your advice would be appreciated

    Hi,

    Try opening the resolution box again, and find the box lower down on the right - Advanced.
    In the advanced box, go to the "Adaptor" tab, and click "list all modes"

    This will show all resolutions your computer can currently output.

    If 1600x900 isnt on that list, you may need to update the driver for your graphics:

    Intel® Driver Update Utility for graphics drivers - Check for the latest driver

    Hopefully it should be able to output 1600x900 with the right driver :)

    Thanks for the advice

    I am afraid I failed though - went onto Intel Website, but the 2008 driver refuses to install, because it says there is a Dell driver installed already rather that the generic Intel one.

    Dell only have a driver dated 2006

    Any further advice would be appreciated.

    Thats annoying - intel don't have a direct link to the driver, so you have to use their scanning system.

    Try right clicking 'My Computer', go to properties, and go to the hardware tab, and click on device manager. Under display adaptors, you should see your graphics chip. Right click it and click 'Update Driver' - this will search windows update for a newer driver.

    If it can't find one, then it might be worth right clicking the graphics chip, and selecting uninstall.
    That will uninstall the dell drivers, and run the card on generic windows drivers (the resolution might go very low at this stage)
    Then try the intel site, and try to install the 2008 drivers.
    If that fails (which I honestly doubt), then try updating the drivers from windows update.

    You've got your dell disc havent you? If so, you've got nothing to lose by trying all of that, as you can always go back to the dell drivers.

    I think this is usually caused from a game that has changed the Rotation setting within the Graphics Controller.

    Concern in check the problem. This is not a measure problem, check your systems all wires properly & switch them again carefully.
