MB is a MSI MS 7310. Memory timing is 5-6-5-15 21 2t. It should be 5-5-5-15 21 2t. Linux is locking up. XP works fine no lock up. How can I change the 6 to 5 with this MB? Thanks Fred
That needs to be done in the BIOS. Are you sure that it needs to be like that? Is that what it is designed to run at? You need to check your MBs manual and the documentation for the RAM.
ON the older MS MB you could change the time. I can not find a way to change this in the BIOS. I have had this problem before & setting the time has taking care of the lockup. Memory is kind of picky that way. Thanks Fred.
Did you study your manual carefully particulary in the BIOS section. If it doesn't have the option to change the timing then it must be automatic and goes by either what the RAM is designed to run at or perhaps what the computer needs it to run at. The RAM is picky and that is why I asked if it is designed to run with the timing that you want. I am finding it strange that windows likes the settings but Linux doesn't.
I tried to install pclos 2009 it would loaad to (EIP: [<f64cbaa4>] oxf64cbaa4 SS:ESP 0068:f747bf58 kernel panic ~ not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt /initrd/bin/ash: can't access tty; job control turned off. It stop here with safemode. Would not load with any options. The memory timing is 5-5-5-15. No help in manual will look 1 more time. Thanks Fred.
If it isn't in the BIOS menu then it must be automatic & there is nothing you can do about that. You might just need to replace the RAM with something compatible. How do you know that its wrong? I ask because it doesn't crash windows but it does Linux as you indicated. Or does it only crash Linux when you try to install something? That would indicate that the problem has to do more with the OS than the hardware. Well I've reached the extent of what advice I have for you considering I don't know Linux all that much. Perhaps someone else, maybe even our Linux person, will have something. Sorry. Good luck.
Hi, twobits. Are you running a linux distro already on this hardrive that uses grub as its bootloader. Because you can get a kernel panic because pclos 2009 I think uses lilo. There is a cheat code you can also try at the live cd boot screen Code: noscsi You haven't posted your computer specs yet to show how much ram you are running on this pc. I never got pclos (minnie me or the full distro) to boot up on any of my computers either. So I moved on to other distros like Ubuntu,Mint,Mepis,Debian. Some Hardware won't run with certain Linux distros because of the way the kernel is configured for that certain distro. Look through PCLinuxOS-Forums - Index and post your query there as those members run that particular distro. Kernel Panic can also be caused by burning the cd at too fast a speed when burning. Try burning it at 4x speed. Also do a md5sum check of downloaded iso file with WINMD5SUM to validate integrity of download. I don't think that memory timing is a issue here(though you say you have had this issue before and changeing ram timing fixed this). Could be all the reasons I listed above or Video Card/Chip related. you may also refer to this thread PCLinuxOS My last recommendation is to make sure no USB devices are plugged into your computer when you try to boot the live cd. I don't know if you are running live, or have installed already. Kernel panic is usually a boot message so that is why I tried to cover everything.
I might also have you check out this thread as DALS PCLOS Members have posted there and you can probably find them at PCLOS Forums. http://www.d-a-l.com/help/linux-help/57121-help-linux-users.html
HI. I have read post after post on Ubuntu. Ubuntu has a lot of net hook up problems. When I tried it with dial up I did not get it to work. I tried PCL user name, password, phone #, up & working. I have wireless net. I have had good luck running PCL. Two years +. Looking forward for the up and coming 2009 edition. I up dated to 2009 & restated PC & it locked up & I tried to install with a CD & it locked up. I have not changed or add any thing. Thanhs Fred
OK, So on Boot up of Live CD PCLOS 2009 is when you get the kernel panic I take it. Since, I don't run PCLOS Linux, and am not familiar with its boot cheat codes, or choices offered when the grub boot screen comes up. I think you will be better served posting your question at the pclos forum link I gave you in post #7. It is like asking what to do to get a Toyota to start in a Jeep shop. They are both cars. Both basically the same. But the devil is in the details. Those guys at PCLOS forum know the details of their distro. If I was running it. I might maybe be of some help. But I don't run it. I have read a few posts kernel panic at the PCLOS forum. But none that had a situation like yours. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. You sound like you know what you are doing. And so, you know how upgrading by using the updater for some folks does not work. That a clean install, is the way to go sometimes. Kernel Changes from 2008 to 2009 is what is killing you right now. And since I have no clue on what changes were incorporated by PCLOS developments team. I suggest you ask the source of those changes. Good Luck twobits.
rokytnji can you tell me how to use the cheat codes for the live CD. I would like to get back using pclos or to install to HD. Thanks Fred
Well Fred, I tried the PCLOS Wiki first but it is still a work in progress and doesn't have enough volunteers yet to contribute to the writing of documentation yet. So I found some cheatcodes for PCLOS at Pendrive Linux at the link below. Good luck and I hope you have success Fred. Cheatcodes for use with PCLinuxOS | USB Pen Drive Linux
Maybe you can glean some info from the links I provide below also What about an ultimate cheat code line for the boot problems? PCLinuxOS When you get to the first boot screen with the menu showing you can start typing in the cheat code. It will show up on the bottom of the screen. From what I have read the seems to be the way to boot up the 2009.1 live cd
I can not get any thing to work. Will not load up so I can install from the CD. I'm thinking about giving up. I have used linux for 3 or 4 years & never had a problem. I don't know where to go from here. Thanks Fred
Is the md5sum check on downloaded iso file OK using Terminal or md5sum checker for Windows? Did you burn iso to cd at a slow speed like 4x. Like I said. I have never had much luck with rpm distros. I use apt based or source based distros. I even had problems with Mandriva which a lot of people don't have problems with. Just the way it is i guess.
I did the burn at 2x. I have 3 or 4 PCLOS CD work on other PC.Tried the no pata, sata & all of the other things i could think of. I'm at a stand still. I don't know where to go or what to do. I have a feeling that the sata HD or the sata DVD player is the problem. I feel like the VD card is fine, but I don't know. XP works no problem I could see this the other way PCLOS working & XP locking up. Oh well. Thanks for all the help.
Minime 2009.2 load up to starting UDEV: & it stops. Tried all the options nothing worked. Tried with some cheat codes. The all generic ide did not work. I don't know where to go from here. I think that ubuntu will load up. I tried it before pclos & there was some things that would not work. Dial up was one. Thanks to all of you. Fred
If you are not happy with Ubuntu Fred because of Dialup. You might give MEPIS 8 a shot. I run Antix 8 which is the Minnie Me version of Mepis 8. I like it. Sorry you are having issues/trouble with PCLOS. The problem with some Linux distros is the developers take the generic Linux kernel and modify it to what it should have for modules and so their distro will boot up fine on some Hardware while not on others. It just hit me just. PCLOS is a rpm distro. Right? So you are used to rpm type distro why don't you try out Mandriva?
I'm on Mandriva. It is locking up about 1 to 2 times a day. I got along for so long a time with pclos. No problems so now I'm having to work this out. Taking more time than I wanted too. I'm on wireless internet so ubuntu will work. I just did not like it. But change is good. Will have to see where this is will take me. Fred
