Is the drive listed in the:

    1. BIOS?

    2. My Computer?

    3. Disk Management?

    4. Device Manager?

    Where; how are you diagnosing?

    What is your Operating System?

Try uninstalling the drive under the Device Manager & then reboot.

I appreciate the help, it didint work, i dont know if this will help at all, but it gave me a code 39 after the missing or corrupted file message. There is power to the rom, but it just seems like the driver dissaperared, would u happen to know where I could get a new driver for the rom, or whatever u think could be wrong. This is the first time it has happened, I have dual firewall (pc cillin) and my ip provider. I am stumped

XP should load its' own drivers for disk drives.

Try the above ideas & see how it goes.

I doubt that it is an issue here but you should only run one firewall.

Open the Device Manager: Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc

Click on the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drives

    Right click on samsung sw-252 s CD-RW

Here you can try: Update driver as well as Uninstall the drive as well as Scan for hardware changes etc.

I have checked Samsung. They do not have drivers for this device as Windows should supply its' own. They do have a Firmware upgrade if you should find that you need it:

Hey there, I did everything what u told me to do, and when my plug and play detected the samsung cd/rw it all loaded then an error came up saying the file is corrupt or missing. What od u think of changing the bus serials to the secondary port ?

Sorry  I am not sure what you mean by: "changing the bus serials to the secondary port".

This is an internal drive is it not? Are you asking about the cable position & or the IDE channel?

By "bus" "serial" "port" I am thinking USB

Just to add more questions: did you make any hardware or software changes before this issue?

What are the verbatim error messages that you receive? Are they always Code 39?

Sorry I wordded that wrong, Yes it is an internal CDROM, The error code keeps saying code 39, I physically pulled the rom out, and the cables, and made sure they were plugged in, tryed reinstalling the driver, and nothing....

Did you try the Troubleshooter in the Device Manager?

On the General Properties tab of the device (right click the drive), click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

After this you might want to consider downloading & installing that firmware from Samsung.

    http://www.samsung.com/support/prod...typecode=&model=SW-252S&filetype=FM&language=

This might help XP in recognizing the drive.

Instructions for upgrading are included in the download.

Please refer to the attached file "How to upgrade firmware".
