Windows XP multiple blue screen problem

    Hi,

I've got a windows XP machine (SP3) that has been fine til recently. It's quite old and overloaded so I've removed (via legit methods) a few of the programs we don't use on it. Today however, when I started it up, it blue screened repeatedly and wouldn't start up even in safe mode. I've managed to get it going using last working version (or whatever it says at the beginning with words similar to that) and I don't see the difference between that and the broken version.

I'm a bit worried about closing it down and trying to restart it.

What should I do to improve the health. I have recently done virus scans, anti malware check etc and all was fine - no problems found.

Another problem is that the sound on the pc is now sounding really bad - crackles, missing words. It's ok when playing a song but any regular video etc or iplayer and it's awful.

    Thanks

    Jenny

Blue screen (BSOD) errors usually indicate a conflict with hardware, or hardware drivers. With this being a pretty old computer, it is likely it is starting to show its age. "Last Known Configuration" resets some key settings to the last configuration that successfully booted (or that is the idea behind that feature, but it does not work very often so you were lucky there). Selecting that is not a temporary change so rebooting would not undue the changes, but that does not mean a failing part is not still failing.

Heat if often a cause for BSODs so you need to make sure the interior is free of heat trapping dust and that all fans spin freely. And I always want to ensure I am supplying my electronics good, clean, stable power so if me, I would swap in a known good power supply to see if problem clears. An aging, failing, straining PSU is a frequent cause of BSODs.

In the meantime, you should backup any data you do not want to loose, and start budgeting for a new computer.

Finally, the BSOD is actually an error screen, and typically it provides a "Stop Code" and error message. Knowing the Stop Code might help us narrow down the culprit.

The stop code was 0x00000007E (didn't count the 0s but I know it won't matter!). I know that's a kernel error. Still having the problem today. We are backing up the old data, and I'll make sure I do a good dust around.

This stop code didn't give any indication as to which drivers were causing the problem.

I am wondering if some things are conflicting - I am including the last error reports (for the last couple of months) for the system - I had problems removing and reinstalling java jdk and things like that. I hope we can get to the bottom of it without having to buy a new one just now!

Could it all be to do with a failed java installation? I updated java to the latest version but I couldn't completely remove the old ones (even using javara). They still remain in the registry. I even couldn't get rid of the latest version to do a fresh installation but had to install on top.

Also, when I go in to run java in the control panel it comes up with an error saying it can't find the registry key needed \Java Runtime Environment\1.7.0_05

Regards a very frustrated pc owner!

In fact there is nothing in the registry under this key name! I've had a look....

Not java... just successfully updated it and then rebooted... still got same problem, but at least java is now functioning properly. The problem seems to have started since I installed secunia psi to check versions of software and then updated things if that helps. Could I have malware on the pc? Have recently run checker and nothing found. I really do wonder what's happened. I do wonder if it could be an unsuccessful install or removal of something. I use revouninstaller most of the time, and I used secunia's links to update the software.

I did previously and Malwarebytes came back clear... however, I'm now running ESET and it's come back with Win32/Adware.Agent/LCKGTSG, Win32/InstallCore.A, Toolbar.Babylon, SoftonicDownloader.A amongst others and it's only 16% through. Should I try to go through the virus finding and removal procedure rather than you then?

I now seem to have java updated and everything, but I went for the malware removal instead of persuing the error code. This is what happened - when running GMER it stopped and it bluescreened the computer and error code in atapi.sys appeared 0x00000d0 I think (I'm not on the pc just now). Should I change to the malware removal blog? Remembering now, this is actually where it all started - I successfully did MBAM scan with nothing found then GMER wouldn't run and bluescreened instead. Since then every time I boot I can't without rolling back. People talk about getting a clean atapi.sys file from a clean win xp sp3 machine, and putting it on the machine, but I don't have access to one!

Error code wrong - its atapi.sys with error code 0x00000d1. I have downloaded a copy of hirens boot cd to properly boot up the pc but I don't have access to a fresh copy of the atapi.sys file, and if it's a virus on the pc surely this won't help anyway?

I've tried gmer with deselecting the 'devices' but the same thing still happens.

Thanks in advance for all your help through my ramblings!
