for some reason now when i press that it flashes for a brief second and then its gone...not enough time to click on it or to do anything with it. any ideas?

How about if you right-click on the grey area of the toolbar below the Start button or next to your main toolbar and select Task Manager ?

Well you taught me something new because I didn't know that you could do that. That did not work either. Another thing that isn't working is to run msconfig. I don't understand why that all of a sudden won't work either.

Have you tried to open task manager in safe mode? And how about finding msconfig.exe by start->find->files and folders. Sometimes you can't run msconfig from "run" in start menu but you can open it manualy from exec.
