    Angry D:/not accessible incorrect function

i just installed a LITE ON SOHW 1213S DVD writer. It apperas a D:/ in explorer

When I place a blank DVD in the drive and try to view it, I get the error message shown below

    D:/not accessible incorrect function.
I'm using XP home edition with SP2

I have managed to burn 4 DVD's in the past. 3 using Clone DVD and 1 using Nero 6. But recently something has changed but I dont know what, I havent upgraded anything or installed anything prior to this problem.

I have however since upgraded Nero 6, and the DVD writer firmware but still the same problem.

I can read DVD'd and CD's that have information already on them.

I've been looking on the internet at this problem and found that its widespread, across many different writers, both CD & DVD, some systems have Nero installed, some with Norton installed, but nothing in common.

I'm guessing its a setup problem in my case ??????

    My writer is brand new.

    Any suggestions would be great

    Thanks
    Matt

    Just to clarify:

Brand new DVD drive installed on machine running XP Home SP2?

Have Clone DVD as well as Nero 6 as well as XP wizard installed?

Under this set-up you were able to burn 4 DVD's?

Now when you attempt to burn you get the error:
    D:/not accessible incorrect function. ?

You can still read discs with no problem?

Have you checked the Device Manager for any problems?
    Start > Run > devmgmt.msc

Also do you know what the settings of these 3 programs are in response to a DVD being detected? They may be conflicting.

This is a default description of the XP wizard:
Check in My Computer - right click the drive, Properties and on the
Recording page check the 'Enable Recording' box and Apply.
You should then find that a r-click on a file has an item in the Send to
to Send to the drive; also you will be able to open a My Computer window
on it and drag files into the 'Files waiting to be written'. Then when
you click the 'Write files to CD' on the left of that window, the wizard
    will start up.

If you choose 3rd party software it is recommended to uncheck the 'Enable Recording' box & to configure thru the 3rd party.

As you say these issues are wide spread and very different on different systems. Hope this is a start for you. Just my personal advice would be to remove all 3rd party software & use the XP wizard (assuming that it is compatable with your burner).

    Yes I have XP2.

And at the moment I have both Nero 6 & Clone DVD on my system, although I tried to use Clone DVD after uninstalling nero but with no success.

I can read original DVD's (Films) and CD's (Music) in my DVD drive. I can also read DVD's and CD that have that already have information burned on them with no problem, its only blank ones that give me trouble.

I've checked device manager and everything is running ok.

With regard to the error message D:/not accessible incorrect function, I only receive this message when i try to access a blank CD or DVD in File manager, when i try to burn through 3rd party software I get various error messages

In Nero its usually - 'Burn calibration error'

And in Clone DVD - 'Please insert a blank disk'

I tried the burner in another computer with the same error message, so I'm guessing its a problem with the burner. Its been returned, so i should receive a replacement in about a week.

With regard to my comment about being widespread, it was just an opinion after I looked on the internet and saw many posting about a similar error message.

I'll try again in when my new burner arrives, if no success, expect another posting.

Thanks for you help, i may be in contect again.

I have had the same infuriating problem.

It means that the DVD burner is effectively useless.

It is not hardware. I think it is to do with Roxio software, which I installed then took off because it was causing lots of problems. The trouble is it was not completely removed and it will not work either.

    I cannot find the solution.

It seems to be one of endless (at least a dozen) expensive nuisances caused by XP. Not that I would recommend anybody using Roxio Media Suite.

I agree that I just wanted to use the XP software to back-up some files.

I would like to get rid of the other programs that are causing this problem. But I do not know how to get rid of Roxio CD/DVD Creator. It still interferes even when removed. If this is the cause of the problem?

Dont know if you sorted that problem yet but I have had it twice now and I found that downloading firmware from the manafacturers site and then flashing the device sorts the problem. Just be really careful that you get the right firmware and be sure you want to do it cos you cant undo it at all.

I do not understand what you are talking about. Not enough data.

I have managed to get Roxio to "Drag and Drop" to the CD-Burner or DVD Burner. This system works better than Nero or the XP system, but it is instead of. It still does not work properly and it does not seem to be trustworthy.

The saved files have a 90% chance of working on other systems. 90% is not high enough reliability though.

All told, the back-up system is unreliable.
