This one seemed interesting. I am running MS XP Home
I restarted my computer one day, after it had been acting up a bit. Sadly, it got about halfway through the little loading bar at the startup, and the bar froze. I understand windows is a bit unstable at times, and I like to humor things, so I let it sit for a good 5 minutes to make sure it wasn't going to resume itself. It didn't keep going, so I restarted, and I got the same thing.
I promptly tried to start Windows in Safe Mode, however, it got to agp440.sys and hung. I tried Last Known Good Configuration, and that just restarted my PC. This left me armed with a new bit of information. There must be something wrong with agp440.sys.
With this information, and the fact that I hadn't reinstalled windows in well over 6 months (I like to do it fairly regularly), I tossed in the windows CD, ready to do a full reinstall. However, it refused to partition the drive. So, I attempted to delete the partition. Again, windows refused. Running out of different buttons to press when windows started, I decided to try and get Safe Mode running so I could work towards reinstalling windows.
I entered "recovery mode" from the cd, however, at this point, I am a bit over my head. I poked around online looking at information about agp440.sys, and found out that maybe my computer would work if I disabled it. So, from the recovery mode command line, I typed "disable agp440.sys". It spat back about 3 paragraphs, mostly concerning the fact that the registry entry for agp440.sys was corrupted.
So, I no longer know what to do. I am hoping some of you have a helpful suggestion. Thanks.
try finding another copy of agp440.sys on the computer, then rename it to something like agp440.old and copied it to c:\winnt\system32\drivers
have you recently upgraded your OS from win2000 to XP?
Oh dear! first things I assemble on boot failure is the removal of all peripherals. This will usually correct any unusual windows 'cannot recognise' failure. If you have totally failed in attempts to initialisewindows I would say might have harware failure.
It could be caused by the video card, cdrom or cdwriter, hard drive, etc. being disconnected or somehow failing. If the box has been opened or jarred its possible a cable was pulled loose on something. Biggest probability is drivers. Disable every peripheral and work backwards
