PC was running fine until a few days ago, when I downloaded latest Windows updates. Since then, PC has been painfully slow. Tried Norton antivirus, WinDoctor etc, found nothing wrong. Tried to do a system restore, but after it had finished and PC started up again, said restoration was not possible. Tried different restoration points, no difference. After looking on internet, downloaded Adaware. When I run it, it gets so far and gets stuck. Gets to 'Deep Scanning Local Registry' CLSID\{62144BEA-E05E-11D1-AAAE-00C04FA334B3}. Norton speed disk also got stuck part way through.

In my last year at uni, need PC to get back up to speed sharpish. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Try running Adaware in safe mode, Starting your Windows XP computer in safe mode.
