I have an optical mouse which has been working flawlessly for 2 years now. Over the last month or so, when scrolling downward on a page it would jump around and sometimes even jump back a full page. I installed new drivers, changed settings and virtually tried everything. Suddenly it dawned on me that this seemed like a mechanical problem. So, I unscrewed the bottom of the mouse (after shutting everything down) and took the top off the mouse. I noticed that the scrolling wheel was held in place by a hub which sensed the wheels movements. Since I had tried everything possible, I felt I had noting to loose by experimenting. I put one drop of alcohol on the top of this hub and instantly blew air through it, attempting to cleanse it of any foreign substance such as a hair or grease or whatever. I then rolled the wheel back and forth a dozen times or so to dry it out. Next, I buttoned everything up and tried it. Amazingly it now works like new. Previously I was under the impression that optical mouses never needed cleaning, I guess I shot down that old wives tale. Good luck to anyone else who is having scrolling problems with their optical mouse.
