pc shuts down while reformmating, neee help asap plz!

Ok here's whats going on, today i power on my pc and it seems to be working slower then it used to be, so i say what the hell i'll reformat so i put in my restore cd reboot the pc, it goes to reformating screen and then all of the sudden at around 3% of the way it shuts down. So now i've been messing with it all day and everytime i try to reformat the pc shuts it self down. note: it heppens at different % everytime so far i been able to get up to 15% and it shuts down. I tried removing different hardware to try to figure out the problem but it makes no difference.

i've reformatted twice before and never had any problems.

    tanx!

I presume that you're trying to format it during the early stages of the Windows XP install routine? Perhaps you could try altering what you're doing to see if a different method works:
    • See if the BIOS has a Low-Level Format option
    • Alter the partition sizes to format just a small amount of disk space - if it works, do it again with a bigger size .... and again until you manage to get the whole disk formatted
    • Format using FAT32 instead of NTFS or the other way round
    • Format with a boot disk rather than the Windows 98 CD (you can download these from www.bootdisk.com I think)
    • Try using FDISK to remove the partition and create two separate partitions before you start the XP install.
I'm making a lot of assumptions and perhaps none of those are relevant to you but I hope that something there helps - let us know
