    Unhappy XP & System Mechanic4

    Hello!
    I purchased a PC booster/troubleshooter/optimizer program after seeing a
demonstration on QVC. (System Mechanic4). Oh dear!! What have I done?
After installing and running the disk everything has gone haywire. All the icons on
desktop have duplicated themselves and are accompanied by a load of symbols
instead of the usual text description. In addition to that the Address bar and
Tool bar have been disrupted. I responded to this by clicking on the desktop
and going through properties and then trying to restore some sort of order.
But on rebooting to 'fix' the changes, all the symbols have returned. I have repeated
this exercise on countless occasions with similar results. I accept that when one
loads these things on to the PC it's "at the users risk" So I have now returned
the item for a refund. But now I am left with a very annoying problem. I would be
be grateful if anyone can come up with a solution.
    Many Thanks

First off I would try running a system restore to a time before you bought the dreaded program.

For the future: programs which claim to increase the performance of your computer will 9 times out of 10 have minimal effect. The best way to increase performance is to wipre your hard drive and reinstall only the things you need or buy extra memory (RAM)

Thanks for your prompt reply, Simon. I have in fact, already tried the 'restore method'
without success. Further information which I failed to give in my initial appeal..The
computer I am working on is a laptop with 512 mem=30gb hard drive and a 1.2
processor. I'm only a casual domestic user so it hasn't been overworked.
Again, many thanks for your observations. I will let you know if and when I get it
    sorted....Regards....Derek
