Local Policy Problem

    Local Policy Problem

I need some help. I have been all over Google trying to find this answer. I have found many people with the problem, but no one has posted an answer to it.

I have a compaq laptop running Windows XP Home. It went to sleep one day, and when I woke it up, it asked me to enter a password. None of my accounts have passwords, so I just hit enter. It then told me that, "The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively." I restarted in Safe mode, trying to logon through Administrator, which also has no password. Same error response.

I inserted the Windows XP Home CD, started up from it, and did "Windows Set Up" and then "Repair." It went through the whole 39 minute installation where it proceeded to reinstall everything. When it was done, it brought me back to my login screen with my normal user names on it...asking for a password. I hit enter, without putting a password in, and...once again, "The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively."

Can someone help me with this? I can't do anything with my computer! I'm completely locked out. Thanks.

if you have searched everywhere and you can't find a solution then there's one thing I would suggest.

If you can get hold of a spare hard drive, 10GB+. Install XP on it and then copy your files over from the old drive. I know this is probably not what you want to hear but it should work and is better than not being able to use your pc!

If you need some further help with doing my suggestion then feel free to let me know and I'll give you some instructions.

Quick question, you aren't trying to use a Remote Access Connection have you?

I just did a reboot after I updated some software and suddenly out of the blue I had the same problem as compaqmoz ... and no I am not trying to run a remote access connection.

    Hello all!

I'm a computer tech at a local computer shop, and I have a client with the exact same problem as listed here. Compaq laptop, WindowsXP Home. Had 2 user accounts that never had a password, user had a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) which locked up the computer while at a conference, and it has asked for a password on all accounts ever since. If you try to login via the welcome screen it responds with the error previously stated "The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively" and if you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete while at the welcome screen and try to login manually to the administrator account it tells you "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction".

If anyone has found a successfull resolution to this problem that does not include a reformat, please let me know! I've already tried a handfull of solutions that did not work, including the following links.

    Thanks for your help!

I am not exactly sure what causes that problem but when there is a password there is a way to brake it Usually with Windows system passwords I use "Passware" password brakers - there is one especially for windows - what it does is it makes a floppy which you use during the booting up the system (from win cd) and removes/changes the password - maybe try that?

I have a similar program and already did that. The thing is, if you type in a password it tells you that you typed in a wrong password. The only way to get the errors that have been described here is that if you DO successfully login with the correct password.

Now, since I did try it, you can tell that I was grabbing at straws, but no, it didn't work. Thanks though!!!!

    Mito,

I tried everything I could think of and my computer guy tried booting off various disks he had and he tried administrator password hacks and group policy hacks and he tried to get to the registry to edit that .. you name it .. it just wasted a day .. eventually I had to use the restore disks and start over. Luckily he was able to back up all my data to a separate hard drive before the restore though.

I'd be very interested to know if you do find a way around this, because the scary thing is that I have no idea what caused the problem. And if it just appeared out of the blue once, then it can do so again and I would hate to have to go through all this restoring again. So please keep us posted on how you resolve the problem.

    Thanks
    Melody

Sorry guys, I got back to my office and there was a message from my client saying that he needed his computer back and wanted us to do a data backup, format, and reload. Looks like this one is still unresolved at this time... hopefully something will come along and fix this problem sometime soon?
