Removed WMP9, encountered major media issues!
Did a clean install of WinXP with SP2 integrated. One of the first things I did was remove all the junk I don't need using XPLite (like windows media player, IE, those accessability tools, etc.). Later on I installed Winamp, Real Alternative and Quicktime alternative with Media Player classic. So far so good. When I tried to play wmv files, it wouldn't work with media player classic. But that's OK I thought, I can just go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...cdownload.aspx , download the Codec Installation Package for Windows Media Player 6.4, install it and view WMV files with media player classic. That always worked before, but they must have changed somethin with SP2 because now it doesn't
When I tried to install the codec pack, it gave this message:
"This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web site."
Of course, it links to a dead link. Wonderful!
I ain't a total noob, I did some searching around to see if there is a solution. I found this:
http://msmvps.com/chrisl/archive/2004/10/02/14743.aspx
Which basically says if I move a file from the origonal CD I can install. So I did and it worked. Sort of. The codec pack installed allright, but Media Player Classic still cannot play WMV files. So, how can I fix this?

Seems to have fixed itself :? I think getting the most recent update to WinAmp did it, but I am not sure.

Glad to hear it!
I actually spent the best part of an hour searching your problem but came up with Nothing!
Anyway; learned a bit about media players
