    AmCap

    Hi y'all,
I just purchased a webcam with amcap software. As has happened in the past when I purchased an webcam with amcap software, the system sends a warning prior to installation, that it is not safe to install on xp.
The first time I installed on xp anyway, and nothing bad happened (but I ended up returning that camera, because it did not fit my needs).
This time, with the new camera, using the programme amcap.exe made the new webcam run -- but now my 1.3 Megapixel built-in camera on the laptop does not work at all. I cannot bring it up under programmes>accessories>assistant for scanner and cameras. I cannot bring it up with settings>scanner and cameras. The former brings up an error message (translated from German: The scanner or camera could not be found. Make certain that the device is on and that it is connected to the computer. If the computer still cannot find the device, open "settings" and click on "scanner and cameras" to add the device).
The latter brings up an empty window with a sidebar. I can ask it to add a device -- but then the wizard opens to add the device, and no asus 1.3 mp camera appears (only a list of most modern camera companies).
I did a system restore to the point before installing the amcap software, but that did not bring my built-in camera back.

another question about this is: (a) when saving something prior to system restore, why does it not get removed while restoring the system?

    Hi AmCap

Can you see your Asus 1.3 mp camera in device manager?

    Go Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc

    Is your camera listed there?

If you cannot see the camera there. Then there is only two possibilities.

1 the camera has some how become disconnected from your Laptop
2 Or the camera is faulty

What is the Make and model of your Laptop
So we can advise you of your best option

    Dear Jim,
Thank you for replying! Under "device manager" there are many categories such as "batteries" "bluetooth" "monitors" and "audio, video and game controllers". (Sorry if this is not the exact terminology; my computer speaks German.) Under the latter there is a "legacy videorecording device", but that does not seem to be my 1.3 mp camera. Would you please be more specific concerning the category under which I ought to look?
I am pretty sure the camera simply got disconnected from the laptop -- it was working fine until I installed AmCap software.
My computer is an ASUS EeePC 1000H.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Janelle

It is probably under other devices
and should be obvious if it is installed and the drivers for the web cam are installed.
Is there anything listed in device manager with a yellow exclamation mark beside it?.
Can you also go back to device manage and on the view option at the top.
    Select show hidden devices.
Can you see your web cam know?

Here is what I have found:
Under Non-PNP-Drivers, there was something with a yellow exclamation mark beside it. I right-clicked on that and uninstalled it, since the help button told me to do so. I then restarted the computer, but since I do not know what I uninstalled, I do not know what to reinstall.

If I right-click "non-pnp-driver" "properties" "driver" there is nothing there. Servicename unknown, display name unknown, current status unknown, type blank.

    non-pnp-driver was under hidden devices.

    My web cam is nowhere.

    Hi Janelle

Asus support here ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Troubleshooting Eee PC 1000HA/XP

Say when a Eee PC has a camera, but the camera device can not be found in the device manager of Windows XP.

The camera device is disabled as default in BIOS.
So we need to ensure the camera is enable in the bios by following the advice on how to do this in the link above.
I must advise you not to make any other changes in the bios than what is advised by Asus.
To do so could make your PC unworkable. So before carrying out the instruction make sure you have a printed copy
of the advice so you can follow the instructions to the letter.

If it is not enabled and you enable it the camera may appear in device manager as an item with a yellow exclamation beside it
    and listed as unknown device.
If this is the case Asus say : -
"By the way, the camera driver for Windows XP is contained in the Windows XP SP2, so it is not available in the support DVD".

To get it to work you will need to right click on the item and select update driver software and windows should find
and install the driver for you.

    Hope this helps
    If not please post back.
I'm going away for the weekend so will not be able to respond to any reply until Monday
