I have a computer running XP Pro that when I click on a desktop icon instead of it opening the program it displays the properties.
Every thing was fine till I needed to use the monitor, mouse and keyboard on another computer. I unhooked the monitor, mouse and keyboard from my computer and hooked them up on the other computer. When I finished using them, I hooked them back up to the original computer and booted up. The icons now will only display the properties. The mouse is attached to an USB port.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Hmmm, that is odd. I wonder if the mouse and keyboard swapped USB ports when returned to original computer. That still should not cause your problem, but it could cause the computer to choke for a minute while it reconfigures drivers for the changes in hardware setups.
I would suggest you try to repair your icons using the Microsoft PowerToy, TweakUI.
I downloaded the TweakUI software and used the "repair" it rearranged the icons but did not fix the problem. I have tried other USB ports and I have tried another USB mouse. The keyboard is not on a USB port.
I have discovered that only a few thing work on the keyboard such as "Ctrl" "Alt" Delete" and "Enter". I can not type anything.
I have deleted the mouse and keyboard using the device manager and rebooted. The mouse does not respond properly while trying to use Yahoo. I would say that I had a motherboard problem but some of the mouse functions will work. I can open programs by right click and clicking "open".
In the October PCWorld magazine on page 94 there was an article about a free tool to back up drivers. After reading the article, I decided to download the tool and back up my drivers.
I am proud that I read that article and backed up my drivers. After trying ever thing of that I could do, I decided to import the drivers back to my computer.
I can now use the desk top icons. Apparently somehow in switching computers the drivers for the mouse and keyboard got damaged.
Thanks Digerati for your interest and comments.
I am glad you got your problem resolved and thanks for the followup.
Guess you've interchanged the right click and left click of your mouse.
