External Hard Drive - No longer detects?
Hey guys, been awhile since I posted here, but Ive always had great service and helpful posts whenever I came here, so I hope you guys can help once again.
I dropped my 640gb External HDD on the carpet, and now it no longer functions.
it is this model:
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
It turns on and everything just fine, but it wont detect in Windows. I will turn it on, and it will do the "hardware detected" beep, but shortly after it will make the "hardware disconnected" beep.
then in another 10ish seconds it will do it again.
when I open computer management, a "disk drive" option shows then hides everytime it beeps.

the dongs marked are the ones I can disable/uninstall to make the noise stop. but when I disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, the two and both enabled again, and the Disk Drive one flicks on and off every 10 seconds.
anything I can do to retrieve some files off this??

Did you open the enclosure to make sure the cables were not knocked loose?
-
yeah its out of the enclosure, there's a small circuit board which hold the USB and power cords, then that slides into the actual drive.
-
Well, you can try it in another enclosure, or install it as a secondary drive in a computer and at least see if you can retrieve your data.
-
Ive thought about putting it in another computer, but the HDD pins don't look anything like that of my motherboard
-
That's an SATA drive so your motherboard would have to support SATA, or you will have to use an adapter.
-
Ill pull the case off after lunch and see what happens
-
-
Must be a pretty old motherboard then as SATA has been around for nearly 10 years and became standard on most motherboards about 5 years ago. Oh well. As noted, there are adapters or try another enclosure.

I cant do any sort of CHKDSK or anything while its detected?
