I've been printing and scanning all day long, and now the machine says it doesn't have a printer installed. Do I uninstall the current machine and reinstall it?

I would reboot first - and power cycle the printer too. If still no good, and the computer and printer are working fine, then you might consider downloading the latest printer drivers from the maker's site, and uninstall the old and install the new, as per instructions on the site.
