xp not recognising external hdd
I need to quickly and simply expand my storage space as I am rapidly running out of space on my internal hdd. I already had an enclosure so purchased a 40GB hard drive and plugged in via a USB. The device seems to be intalled and appears in Device Manager (assigned device number 0) but is not recognised as an external storage device.
Can anyone HELP?
MANY THANKS
Regards
Mick

Did you format the drive?

Hi Digerati
Thanks for your reply
No, i havent formatted the new drive
I purchased it on ebay with the instruction that it had been data wiped, cleaned and ready for use on a desktop pc.......Can I format the drive without it being recognised by my computer?

You said it appears in Device Manager. You should be able to right click on it and select format.
That said, if it was wiped, it must have been formatted, so hopefully the drive is good, and the enclosure too.

Does sit show up in Disk Management? Start / Run / diskmgmt.msc and press Enter.
