Whenever I go to "My Documents" for a brief moment all files show up but then the whole thing freezes.
The only option is control alt del and then end task which after several minutes will make all the desktop vanish and come back shortly after.
Any help most welcome.

Boot to Safe Mode. Does the same thing happen? If not then look at the files in My Documents. Are any of then .avi or other movie file formats? Try running chkdsk /r from Start / Run. See if that repairs any file system problems.
