Nothing happens when I try to shut down my computer[RESOLVED]

I am running Windows XP Pro on an office network. When I try to shut down my computer (Start->Shut Down->shut down) nothing happens. Nothing at all. No flicker of the screen, no action - nothing. The same thing happens when I try to restart or log off. The machine just keeps chugging along as I had not tried to do anything at all, much less tried to shut it down. It's like it's just totally ignoring the shut down or restart or log off command.

It didn't use to be like this, but I cannot for the life of figure out what, if anything, I did that could have led to this.

The only way I can shut down the computer now is by using the power button. I have tried to find the resolution to my problem by searching the Internet, but so far - no luck. Can you please help me?

    Thanks so much.

Office network, that being said your best course of action would be to ask the person who takes care of your employer's computers rather than trying to fix it your self. Just my 2 ¢

Very good advice - and usually, you would be right. But believe me - I know more about Windows and things computer-related than the guy who's supposed to take care of our computers. If I can't do something myself, he certainly won't ever be able to help me.

    try this-
right click on an empty area of the desktop click new> new shortcut and type: shutdown -s -t 00
notice the spaces after the shutdown, the -s and the -t
Please let me know if this helped
