The most basic wireless network requires two pieces of hardware. The computer needs a wireless adapter such as one of these or one of these - a network device similar to an Ethernet network adapter that uses radio waves instead of wires to connect to the network. Note that your "network" is basically everything on your side of your "gateway device" - typically the DSL or cable modem.

Then you need a WAP (wireless access point) for the adapter to communicate with that then connects your computer to your network. While the WAP is technically a separate device, these days they are typically integrated on the same circuit board as a router (and often with a 4-port Ethernet switch too) and put in one box called "wireless router".
