    Loading software

Can I use my desktop computer to load programs onto a mini computer which has no cd/dvd drive?

Without knowing any of the particulars of either computer, in theory, yes. You can do this. But there are several variables that allow or prevent this, depending on the features of both machines, and the program you are installing. Note you said "load". You load a program that has already been installed so I assume you mean you want to install the program onto the mini-computer so you later load and run it.

We would need specifics of the hardware and operating systems before being able to give specific advice.

My desktop has Windows XP and the mini will have Windows 7 - and yes, I do mean install. Thanks for your help so far.

You are welcome. But if you are looking for more advice, all we know is the operating systems.

You "should" be able to share the CD/DVD drive on the XP computer then access it from the Mini.

Do you have a home network now? I'm guessing you do (or will) and your Mini will connect wirelessly via a router. If so, the above should work. If not, come back with some specific questions.

Again, I appreciate your reply. I'm not sure what other information I can give your regarding the two computers. My intent is to use the mini for travel - email, or course, but also to keep up with day to day responsibilities using Quicken, Microsort Word, etc. My desk top has all these programs and I have the discs for same. Probably if I knew what information to volunteer I wouldn't need to ask for assistance...

I don't have a home network nor am I trying to establish one. The mini is intended for travel still allowing me to use programs like Quicken, Microsort Works or Word, etc.

It seems logical to me that one should be able, thru usb ports, to use the cd/dvd drive on my desktop to install programs into the mini - but, obviously I don't know how to do that... By the way, thanks for your reply!

How does you Mini connect to the internet if you don't have a home network?

You have two computers, and both can access the internet, right? If so, how are you doing this?

The desktop is probably connected to a modem or router via Ethernet cable and the Mini via wireless connection. If so, then you have a home network.

I haven't purchased the mini yet, which is why I'm asking these questions. I will, however, use a wireless usb adapter to connect the mini to the internet. Because the mini is a 'mini', using it, instead of a full size laptop, is convenient when traveling. If I can't install the programs I've mentioned the mini is of no use to me...

Why will you need a wireless usb adapter? The mini should come with built-in wireless capability. All you'll need is a modem that provides wireless access from your ISP or a wireless router. Once your network is setup and both the desktop and mini are connected, you should be able to share the CD/DVD drive from your desktop to load software on the mini. If not, you can copy the CD to a USB flash drive and install it from there.

Same for printing. You have a printer on the desktop that you share and then you print to it from the mini as needed.
