Need Lan-Express IEEE 802.11 PCI Adaptern version 2.01.00, not any letters after it.

I have a 2002 laptop with xp home edition. Everything I try to download is too new & will not work with my system. Mine quit working, I got a 'code 10' error. Comcast Desktop doctor diabled it, then was not able to re-enable it. HP said to delete & reinstall, I followed that, deleted it, but it did not reinstall as it was supposed to. Can't use my wirelss, have to stay hooked up in one room now. I am 62 & not good with anything besides e-mail. Any suggestions guys?

Hi willeyle and welcome to D-A-L.

There has to be a letter after it. 802.11 is a "family" of protocols for wireless networking. For there to be communication, both the adapter and the WAP (wireless access port) must use the same protocol, whether it be 802.11b, 802.11g, or the latest 802.11n. Since the industry standardized on 802.11b in 1999, and 11g in 2003, if your adapter is original equipment, then it is likely you need 11b. If this adapter came with your notebook, you should be able download the necessary drivers from the maker's website.

What we need to be be more specific in our advice is for you to be specific about the hardware.

Note I removed your email address for security purposes. You should never post your personal information, including email addresses, in public accessible places, like forums. Badguys "troll" websites looking for email addresses they can add to their spam lists.

Digerati, Hi & thanks for helping. Hope you will continue to teach me. How do I check th 'adapter protocol' & the 'wap protocal' to see if they are the same? Also here is the info I got from the device manager hope it will help.
This one gives me a yellow cone -ALL the others gave me red X in system tray. It says excellent strength but little or no connectivity, & will not fnd any wireless network connections.. Info below.

The manuals, or look up the model numbers via Google or your favorite search engine.

Yellow "cone"? Do you mean a black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field - that indicates the device is in a problem state. Note that a device that is in a problem state can be functioning.

And what do you mean by "all the others" have a red X in the system tray?

Can you post an image of your Device Manager window? To open it, click on Start then Run, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter. Size the window so you can see everything, then press Alt+Print Screen (copies the active window to the clip board).

Click on Start then Run, type mspaint and press Enter. Click on Edit then Paste then File then Save as to save the image.

Now use the paperclip icon above the text input area to upload an image. When that's done, close that window then click on the paper clip again and select the uploaded image. It will be placed in your post. Click the Preview button to see it.

I am very sorry, but no matter how I do it, after clicking save as in mspaint, I cannot find a paperclip anywhere.* Either before clicking on save or after.* Where is it?* I now have multiple images of the device manager, but do not know how to upload to here.* Hey, I just found it HERE, I was looking for it in mspaint. Here is the attachment, I just found the preview button. devicemanager.bmp

There is definitely a problem with some LAN Adapter, probably the Wireless one.

Try this driver: LAN Express IEEE 802.11 Wireless Driver - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

    Ztruker,
Should I uninstall anything first? It would not let me uninstall the wireless adapter when I tried after the yellow showed up on it.

No, just run the HP_WLAN.EXE file you downloaded. Directions are on the same web page you downloaded it from.
    :
LAN Express IEEE 802.11 Driver for Microsoft® Windows XP

    Installation steps

    Execute "HP_WLAN.EXE".

    1. A Welcome screen appears in which the installation steps are described. Press Next.

    2. The InstallShield displays a "Choose Destination Location" dialog. The default destination folder is "C:\Program Files\HP\Wireless\802_11\UPDATE." You can press Browse to change to different folder.

    3. Press Next button to continue.

    4. InstallShield copies all necessary files on your system, then a dialog containing the message "InstallShield Wizard Complete" appears. Press Finish button to continue.

    Name of step 2

    1. To complete the update for your HP Wireless LAN driver execute the file SETUP.EXE from the directory into which InstallSheild copied the files. This would default to "C:\Program Files\HP\Wireless\802_11\UPDATE."

    2. A dialog box appears with the choices Modify, Repair and remove. Select Repair, then select Next.

    3. Setup performs some operations (such as registry setup), then a dialog appears to ask you whether you want to reboot now or later. It is required to reboot your system for the changes to take effect. If you do not want to reboot now, select I will reboot my computer later. Press Finish and the installation is complete.

Done-installed, & restarted PC. Device driver is showing Lan-Express IEEE 802.11 PCI Adpter #2, but the taskbar icon has the red 'X', and under Choose a Wireless Network, it says 'Windows cannot configure this wireless connection'. This happens every time I try to donload & install any new adapter. Sometimes the icon in the tray is a red x, and sometimes a yellow triangle with a '!', but I get the same message about not being able to configure it. I tried going to the article 871122 in the MS knowledge base as suggested, but it just says the page is not available, so I don't know how to access or use the Wireless Zero Configuration service by Windows that they are telling me to use in that same message area.
