I have suddenly got a blue band appear on the left hand side of my desktop. It has got three sub headings ie Folder Tasks /Other Places / and Details. The three sub Headers all contain a tree. "Other places" has Documents/My Documents/My Network places. It seems to have appeared without any action on my part and I would like to get rid of it !

Well, it sounds like a sidebar of some sorts. If this bar has a header, can you right click on it for more information or perhaps close it? A screen shot may be necessary for us to get more details. I would also run a full anti-malware scan as a precaution.
Digerati,
Many thanks for the prompt response. I have run a full scan using SpyBot and no malicious threats were found (following a full update of SBot ) I am not sure of how to send you a screen shot but will do so with some advice,

And stupid is the question not asked.
While I don't think this is malware, I don't trust SpyBot alone - maybe 7 or 8 years ago, but no longer. If that is your primary anti-malware program, you should look at something else. I have converted all my systems over to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), including my remaining XP systems and have no regrets. If nothing else, I recommend a supplemental scan with Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware (MBAM).
There are several screen capture programs out there, but I've always liked MWSnap for XP.
Did you try right clicking on it and closing it?
Digerati,
again thanks for your determined effort and timely advice. As you can see from the screenshot I have downloaded and run a full scan using the MSoft anti malware programme which found nothing untoward. Right clicking on any area to the left blue area has no response. I also downloaded the little screenshot programme which is an amazing little tool for its size and should prove useful in the future. A screenshot has been attached as an attachment (I hope ),
best regards,
El Dimmo.

Bitmaps don't work well so I changed your image to jpg. Now I understand what is happening. There are couple relatively easy solutions, both requiring registry fixes. Here are two "trusted" links - choose one or the other. After the making the change, you may have to reboot for the changes to take effect.

Digerati,
Solution worked perfectly. Thankyou again for your help. A small donation has been sent to keep this site up and running. The value of DAL lies in people like me who are reasonably computer literate but do not have sufficient knowledge to start altering registery files etc,

Super! Glad it worked. Thanks for the followup. And the donation is much appreciated.
