pc hangs everytime i try to do something

    hi,

last few days my c drive was almost full so i moved, deleted and uninstalled some things.then i also ran the disk check when restart my pc (the one saying i could skip by pressing any key)...after it was restarted, everything looks ok,and i was installing kaspersky and my pc hung.it becomes very slow and i cant open anything after that.everytime when i restart,i'll be able to launch applications like normal but i cant do anything with them...whenever i try to click something or do anything with them, the applications will be in 'not responding' state.even with my internet browser,i can launch the browser but if i try to click anything or type in the search field,it hangs.

i also tried running my windows in safe mode,it seems fine.i booted into normal mode and tried to uninstall kaspersky but because im having this problem,it hangs once the uninstaller was launched.im not even sure if it was installed properly, but i found that it's already in my programs.i tried fixing using hijackthis, but it hangs once i click fix.

is there anything i can do to solve this problem?thanks in advance for any help

    Hi sanlia

It just possible you have a corrupted system file. To check this you will need a XP installation CD
If you do not have one a borrowed one from a friend will suffice.
Now start in safe mode and run System File Checker (SFC)
An how to on SFC can be found here scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker)
If you have a problem with this please post back.
Once that is complete go to Safe Mode again and from the Start menu select Run and in the box that appears type CMD
In the window that opens at flashing prompt type chkdsk c: /f
note the space between K and :
If you are told the volume is in use and do you want to check this on restart select Y for yes

It will take some time to do these task and its best you do not interrupt but let them finish

    Hi Jim23,

    Thanks for helping...

So ok i got my cd,and logged into safe mode with command prompt.

I typed sfc /scannow on the Run window field but nothing happened,so i opened cmd and typed sfc /scannow.but then i got this error message saying:

Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.

The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RFC server is unavailable.].

I tried reading on the net,i found that i had to open Regedit.exe and put the value of SFCDisable to 0,but when i checked it was already 0.

I have also followed the steps here support.microsoft.com/kb/296241 but it seems the certificate is not missing.

any idea how i can run the sfc /scannow?

    Hi Sanlia

Take a look at this Windows File Protection may not start

I know its listed for 2000 but XP and 2000 are very similar OS's
and it is for the same error message : -

When you attempt to use the sfc /scannow command, the command may not work, and you may receive the following error message:
Windows File Protection could not be initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific code is 0x000006ba [The RPC Server is unavailable.].

    Yes Jim,

I did check that page and followed the steps...but it seems the certificate wasnt removed...now im running the sfc /scannow on normal mode, not safe mode...will it still work?i just launched it and didnt have to click anything more so it didnt hang until now...it's still running.i wont touch anything else to avoid it from hanging again....

Hmmm it seems very slow...i dont even know if it's already hung.it's like less than 10% stuck there at the same spot for a long time.it seems like it'll take a very long time to finish....i'll let you know when it completes or if it doesn't move for hours.

We can try scanning your system files on when you restart your computer.
This command may require access to the Windows installation source files when you restart the computer.

    The command is sfc /scanonce

See here for reference Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe)

When you said. "last few days my c drive was almost full so i moved, deleted and uninstalled some things".
Have you tried system restore to revert your pc back to the time before the problem occurred.
I didn't suggest this previously because you've taken the time to clean your PC and
SFC is usually a simple task to replace any possibly corrupted or deleted System files.

If this does not work we will have to go through the process of finding what is causing your PC to hang.
The first step is to see if the problem is a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)
To check this we need to allow Windows to show us a BSOD error message. We will need that message to troubleshoot your problem.
To do this right click MY Computer and select Properties.
In that window select the Advanced Tab. Now under Startup and Recovery select Settings.
Now remove the tick from Automatically restart
Now hope fully when the PC hangs it will give us a BOSD. Make a note of the full error message and post it here.
To restart your PC press and hold ( not hard) your PC power button. This will power down your PC.
Now restart in the normal way and post the message.
