    Hi snauwer Welcome to D.A.L

For BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) with Stop:0X0000008E is a kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues
Information on this here Troubleshooting Windows STOP Messages
Microsoft suggest this may be ram failure.
See here "STOP 0x0000008e" error message during Windows XP setup
Since this is relatively easy to troubleshoot because PC almost always have more than one stick of ram.
If you carefully remove one stick of ram and try the PC. If the problem persist
Replace the stick of ram you've removed and remove the second stick hopefully your PC
    with now start.
If you have more than two stick of ram you will need to remove one stick at a time until
you find the faulty stick of ram.

Your PC will of course run much slower when you have reduced ram so if you discover
a faulty stick of ram it will obviously need to be replaced

From the information you give it could also suggest that the hard disk may be faulty is it possible
to run chkdsk from your windows XP CD to check your hard disk?

    Hi snauwer

I would first run chkdsk from you XP CD
How to on this here How to Run a chkdsk :: Schrock Innovations Free Help Article :: hard drive repair
If chkdsk cannot find your hard drive then it is most likely you have a faulty hard drive.
In order to test the hard drive further I would need to know the hard drives make and manufacturer
to advise what software to download to check the drive.
If it chkdsk finds and repairs faults on your hard drive but the PC will still not start
I would go on to check your ram.
If you only have one stick of 256mb ram. I would buy another 256mb stick of ram and try your PC with that if it works then the problem is solved. Even if it proves not to be the ram an additional
256mb of ram could only be of benefit to your PC.
If you need advice on what ram you need for your PC we will need to know the exact model Number of you motherboard.

The error message "the specified file or path is not valid" occurs because you entered the
    command wrongly
When you enter the recovery console the command to run chkdsk is not c:/>chkdsk /p

    But : -
    chkdsk c: /f

Were C: is the letter for the hard drive that windows XP is installed on
/f is to fix any problems that chkdsk finds
Note the spaces between C and the /

If this does not work post back. I will be away from this PC for a while so it could be a few days before I reply
