    Question 1152: error extracting

I am trying to setup Opera 10.60. Each time I click on the downloaded file, after a pause a message comes up with '1152 error extracting'.

I have emptied the temporary folder and unblocked on file properties without success.

I cannot read the full message as there is not room, but it is a file reference.

    Can you help please.

In researching this problem, it seem to be related to a lack of free disk space on C drive. If you are running low, it may be affecting more than just this. I recommend purging the hard drives of clutter with Windows XP Disk Cleanup, ATF Cleaner or CCleaner. If using CCleaner, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar during installation. Before first use, go to Options > Settings > Advanced and ensure Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours is unchecked. Know your site credentials (user names and passwords) for sites you frequent before cleaning; you may have to login again at next visit.

You may need to go through Control Panel > Add and remove programs and uninstall any programs you don't use. If you don't know what a program does, leave it.

    Dear Digerati,

Thank you for your reply, I have already used both CCleaner and Regcure to no effect.

I have plenty of room on the hard drive, but due to an error when replaciing the drive and reinstalling XP some months ago 'C' is an empty partition on the drive with with everything installed on 'F' drive.

Should this be the cause of the problem, I don't know how to remedy it without formating and starting again. Do have any less radical solutions?

    Thanks,

I caution about the use of miracle products such as RegCure. See RegCure Scam.

And F drive has plenty of free space? What is on D and E? Where is your page file?

Does it only happen with Opera? What happens if try to download something else - say Firefox?

    Hi Digerati

I've looked at some Regcure publicity and reckon I've possibly thrown the cost away.

D & E are DVD and CD drives. The paging file is on Drive F with XP system files and ranges from 1536 - 3072 MB.

I have just downloaded Firefox which has extracted and installed without any problem,
could there be a bug in the Opera download?

    Thanks for your help.

Can you post an image of your Disk Management window? To open it, click on Start then Run, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter. Size the window so you can see everything, then press Alt+Print Screen (copies the active window to the clip board).

Click on Start then Run, type mspaint and press Enter. Click on Edit then Paste then File then Save as to save the image.

Now use the paperclip icon above the text input area to upload and image. When that's done, close that window then click on the paper clip again and select the uploaded image. It will be placed in your post. Click the Preview button to see it.

here are the following possible reasons:

1 - you do have sufficient permission to install
2 - the drive is full (or if your account has a quota, you reached it)
3 - you do not have permission to write to the location specified
4 - the installation file is corrupt.

    check these out.

    Hi Ztruker,

Herewith MS Paint bitmap as requested. Hope this is helpful. Had to cut the size down to get inside acceptable limits.

Thanks Tom. That shows you have plenty of space on all drives, including C: so disk space is not the problem. When you double click the downloaded Opera_1061_en_Setup.exe, what it does is extract Opera Installer.exe to your %tmp% directory then run it to do the actual install. This will be

    C:\Documents and Settings\<yourserid>\Local Settings\Temp

You can get to the temp directory by by clicking Start then Run, typing %tmp% and pressing Enter or navigating there from Windows Explorer or My Computer. See if you can create a file there by right clicking while looking at it and selecting New then Text Document. If that works then you have write access to that folder as well as the correct permissions.

A work around would be to install a free program like 7-Zip and install it. Then you right click on the Opera download Opera_1061_en_Setup.exe then click on 7-Zip then select Extract Here.

That will place Opera Installer.exe in the same folder. Double click on it to start the Opera install. Doesn't solve the problem but will let you install Opera.

Thanks Ztruker, discovered that I have write access and permission for the temp folder, so I don't know why it wouldn't extract.

However, I followed your workaround and installed Opera without problem.

    Thanks again
