See NTVDM CPU Has Encountered an Illegal Instruction

Of greater concern to me is that other error message that says you are not running AV software. If you connect to a network that has Internet access, you are putting your computer, and the data on it at great risk.

Also, that program, help.exe, is running from the Windows\temp directory which is unusual. I would install and run CCleaner Slim to clean out the various temp junk that collects on a computer during normal use.

    Thanks for the replies

i have just done a fresh install following a major breakdown and the message started appearing not long after i installed norton so i temporarily uninstalled that, hence the protection message

will try the prog suggested and report back
    cheers

If Norton is uninstalled, consider installing and using Microsoft Security Essentials instead. Let it update than do a Quick Scan.

Norton usually doesn't uninstall cleanly so it might be a good idea to run the Norton Removal Tool before installing MSE.

Problem solved. Thanks for the advice. I have cleared out Norton and installed security essentials and so far so good. It hasnt slowed my system down as much as norton did but i cant expect the thing to exactly fly given the spec anyway

    thanks again
