    External HDD synchronisation

    Hello D.A.L

I have heard that you can set up and external hdd to synchronise with a pc to automatically back up documents. Sorry for my ignorance, its not something im familiar with.

Is it possible and if so can i back up specific folders.

My situation is that im a dj and everytime i buy and rip a cd (yes i actually buy my music) i have to physically plug in the hdd then sort my folder structure on my local drive and external. this gets confusing especially with itunes music and if im in a hurry, rip a cd and move it into my folder structure without doing the hdd at the same time.

A step by step guide would be very usefull.

    thanks
    Dave

    Hi Dave

The backup you are looking will be either differential or incremental.
A short explanation of these here: Incremental backup vs differential backup: difference and benefits of each one
A walk through will depend on what software you use for your backup
Most freeware programs don't do such backups. GIF Backup I think does but the freeware software can
only be used for none commercial use and since its for your DJ work this would be considered commercial.
If you indicate what your present backup software is I'm sure someone can give you an explanation.
On how to do a incremental or differential backup.
    Hope that helps

    Jim

    Thanks for the post Jim

As i said i im not up to speed on back up,maybe i am barking up the wrong tree altogether with hdd synchronisation, it was sometihng i had heard about and wondered if it would work for me.

I will read the article you have linked to and go from there.

I dont have or use any backup software at the moment and as i stated i manually copy folders and files etc.

    cheers

    Dave
