It is easy to put a shortcut on your desktop. Rght click on a blank space on the desktop, then click New > Shortcut. In the textbox enter: http://mail.yahoo.com/

Then press Enter and the new shortcut will appear. But this will not notify you of new mail. You could install the add-on Yahoo Toolbar and that will do both for you, put Yahoo on your desktop and notify you when you get new mail. But I personally don't like adding Toolbars. And this also requires your browser to be running.

Yahoo Messenger will put a system tray (that area next to the clock) icon that will notify you of new mail and there are 3rd party new mail notifiers, but I have no experience with them so others will have to comment about their pros and cons.

Another easy way to create a link to Yahoo mail is to open the browser, go to Yahoo mail. Then click and hold the left mouse button on the small icon on the left side of the address bar (before http: ) and drag it to the desktop, then release the mouse button.

You can then right click on the icon on the Desktop and select Properties to rename it or even select it (left click on it once) then press F2 and rename it.,
