Seemed to have reached an impasse with this. The program moveonboot sees the icon but it has no name so moveonboot says that 'file does not exist and can't delete'. In fact it is an icon with no recognizable identification apart from that which I have already indicated.
Just a thought, what about deleting my user profile and creating a new one? Your advice on that one please?
If you are the only user, I wouldn't - not without making sure I had backed everything up. Not when it does not seem to be doing anything bad, yet.Just a thought, what about deleting my user profile and creating a new one? Your advice on that one please?
The solution here for the same thing was a system restore. If yours has only been there a couple days, that might be your best bet.
Hi Betty
Folders sometimes have a 8.3 name
For example My Download folders 8.3 name is DOWNLO~1
If the folder with no name has an 8.3 name you could delete using that.
To find if this folder has an 8.3 follow these instructions.
If you go to Start then Run
In the window type CMD
In the window that opens up you will see
C:\Documents and Settings\your name>
at the blinking cursor type cd desktop (note space between cd and desktop) and press enter
You will now see C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Desktop>
Now type DIR /X (again with space between DIR and /) and press enter.
You will now see a list of all files and folders on your desktop.
Look down the list to see if there are any 8.3 names on your desktop.
For example my download folder will be listed like this
Date time <DIR> DOWNLO~1 download
So your problem folder will have a ~ or a ~ with a name if the folder as an 8.3 name
along side it but in the last column there should be nothing
If it does have a 8.3 name you can remove it using that.
First make sure you have the correct folder name because this command will delete the folder you
name and all its contents.
RMDIR DOWNLO~1 /s change DOWNLO~1 for the name of your problem folder.
Again make sure you insert the spaces as shown.

Thanks Jim23, I reckon your info would have been the way to do it. In fact it disappeared purely by chance, here's how. I made another user profile, the folder appeared alongside other icons in this number 2 profile, I right clicked on the desktop, got 'arrange icons by'---then selected 'run desktop cleanup wizard' the folder appeared in it alongside other icons. I selected to remove it, the wizard did the rest. On going back to my original profile, it was still there and did not show up in the cleanup wizard. On restarting the computer it has been deleted.
Thanks to all those who gave advice.
