HP Laptop shuts down when trying to install xp

I am new here - so please be patient with me. I have tried to find this fix here and while I can find the issue - I do not see a fix.

I have a HP Pavillion DV5000. I had a virus (Windows xp 2010 Virus) and have the need to reformat my laptop.

I tried loading my repair disks- get to the 3rd disk and the computer turns off.

    I got a XP disk

    New 120 GB hard drive

Starts to run - gets to Copy files and shuts down. Sometimes it gets to 97%, sometimes 5% - there doesnt seem to be any reason to it....

It doesnt seem to be an issue with it getting hot as it will turn right back on and
reload to the "copy files" and who knows how far it will go from there...

I am at a loss - I was wondering if maybe it could be the RAM? Would it make sense to replace it?

Please help. I am a online student and this is my only computer at home....

    Thanks so much!!!!

Hi Babs. It could be RAM. How much do you have in your laptop? If there are two DIMMS then remove one and try the install again. If it still fails, swap DIMMS. That way, if it installs with one removed then that is the bad one and you can then replace it, yet still use the laptop in the meantime, though it will most likely run a lot slower.

See the HP Pavilion dv5100 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide for instructions. RAM is one of the easiest things to work with in a laptop.
