    Angry Toshiba Laptop XP

    Hi There,
I've been trying to fix my daughters laptop the past couple of days, on boot-up it seems to take an eternity, & when it eventually does everything changed on the profile has changed back to default settings?

I have tried CCleaner & disk defrag which has improved the speed slightly, but it is becoming more frustrating everytime we logon? then after a while on the laptop it shuts itself off, I changed power settings but this is lost again when shutting off laptop?

I don't get Windows welcome or shutdown tune either?

Can you please point me in the right direction

    Thank you
    John

The primary problem is probably heat. The inside of the laptop has accumulated a lot of dust/pet dander over time and this clogs up the cooling fins of the CPU heat sink. The laptop will need to be taken apart and cleaned thoroughly then reassembled.

Not a simple task unless you have the Maintenance and Service Guide for your specific laptop available. If you tell me what the make and model of the laptop is, I may be able to locate the M&SG on the manufacturers web site, or you can look there yourself.

It might be best to take it to a reputable Computer Repair shop and have them do it, unless you like a challenge :-) It's not real hard to do, you just need to be very methodical, follow directions well and mark every single screw you remove so you know where it goes when you're ready to put it back together again.

Did the laptop come with a recovery CD or is there a partition on the Hard Dive (usually D: )? If so, once the laptop is cleaned so it's not powering off on you, you could restore the computer to it's Factory Installed state with the CD or HD partition?

Hi Rich thanks for the reply, I have worked with PC's\Laptops in the past & I know how difficult it can be taking apart & back together again, I no longer have the time or patience anymore, especially since I have 5 kids running around, I think the best option would be passing to a qualified engineer to repair

I appreciate the feedback, this has had a domino affect as my home Pc which is 7 years old has 22 viruses that I can't remove without re-formatting the OS

    Thanks again

You can try the malware area here: Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs - D-A-L Computer Help.

They are very good and can walk you through it, using the latest tools.

    Hi Rich,

Thanks for the help I have ran malware scan & my PC is back to normal, just need to make sure the PC gaurd is active.

I also ran the scan on the laptop & this resulted in 250 threats, cleared memory but the same problem persists with profile everytime it is logged off/shut-down, I will bok an engineer to give laptop a good clean-out as you advised.

    thanks again, much appreciated.
