Not able to open IE or windowsupdate
I hv got weird problem in my laptop. I have windows XP Sp3 installed. I normally use Firefox as browser. Mcafee antivirus installed on my laptop stoped getting updates for some reason. I contacted their tech support and they found IE is not working and they need IE for getting updates.
When I open IE it just gives some error and gives me message to send error report. I tried uninstalling and then installing it again from windows XP CD but that did not help.
Then I tried to download IE 8 but for some reason it keeps giving error when I click on start download. I am also not able to access windowsupdate website. I don't know if it some virus which is not letting me access any of these sites or is something wrong with operarting system/browser. As IE is not working so I am accessing all websites on firefox.
Any help is much appreciated.

Welcome to D-A-L,
I would suggest you run SFCScannow to see if your OS has any missing or corrupted .dll files.
If that improves your system, I would then run through this tutorial from Method 2 which should assist you to update your Windows Updates again.
Keep us posted if you need more assistance. I suggest you read the post in my signature to give us as much information as possible to help you further if needed.
kind regards,

Thanks Tallin !!! I tried SFCScannow and there seems to be some dll missing. It asked for CD. I inserted that. It ran fine for about 95% and then it again asked for CD. Looks like it is looking for some files which are missing on CD as well... not sure how is that possible.
I will try copying i386 folder from CD on my machine as mentioned in article. Let's see how it goes.
Thanks again !!!

I suggest you start again, insert your OS CD before you go to start > run > sfc /scannow
Make sure it is the correct OS CD, if you have not got the correct one, it is okay to borrow one for this purpose.

The CD is correct. I had problem last year so I had to format the hard disk and I reinstalled windows using this CD. I will give it another shot and as you said will insert the CD before running sfc command.
Thanks for your post !

Hope it works for you this time, if it asks for the CD during the scan, just continue, but do not eject the CD in the middle or you will be forced to start again.
