I have just been trying to explain to someone else how to back up emails so she could reinstall Office and not lose emails from Outlook.
I use Thunderbird myself, and previously I have found my emails in Documents and Settings > My User Name > Application Data > Mozilla.
While writing the email to help my friend I tried to follow that path and I can't find my emails, or the relevant Application Data file, so I have confused myself. (And I haven't sent the email.) The path I have followed is C drive > Documents and Settings, and then I get a choice of Administrator, All Users, and Default User. I can't find Mozilla in the Application Data folder of any of those three folders, so if I want to back up my emails I can't. I am now concerned there may be something wrong in how I have my system set up.
So what should the path be? I have View Hidden Files checked, so I should be able to see the Application Data files.
Also, is there a simpler way to back up emails in Outlook?
Hi Ztruker,
Thanks for the very prompt response.
I followed your instructions, and got "C:\Documents and Settings\My Name>" which is what I was expecting to see when I went to Documents and Settings with My Computer. So why don't I see my name?
I have double checked to see if the radio button against View Hidden Files is selected, and it is.
Kinda confused here.
Hi Ztruker,
I have already tried the %AppData% command and it takes me to the Application Data files I can't otherwise access.
And unchecking the two other, as you suggested, now allows me to see the folder like I should. The second one also provoked an impressive reaction from Windows!
Now that I can see the Application Data for Thunderbird (it wasn't in the Mozilla folder at all, only Firefox) I can see three items, registry.dat, profiles.ini and a folder called Profiles. The Profiles folder is 211mb. I think that is all there is supposed to be. If you use Thunderbird let me know if you see anything else, please.
When I have had to do Windows re-installations (touch wood) I back up the Application Data, as I have been burned by Moz Backup in the past. Doesn't work, mutter, mutter ... and I lost a lot of emails I would rather not have.
So why I could not see that folder without unchecking the two is probably a :how long is a piece of string" question, just Windows being Windows.
Thanks heaps for the pointers, and the solution to a bizarre problem.
I have another question regarding Thunderbird, but that is so I will start another thread.
Thanks again Ztruker, your blood is worth bottling!
