    Windows XP shutdown issues

I'm working on a laptop that was recently reformatted, but upon being shut down the laptop doesn't actually fully shut down. It hangs and just stops. This happens even when I try to restart it the only way I can turn it off is by a hard shut down (me pushing the laptop off button). I tried to reformat it again, and making sure quick format wasn't picked, but as the window cd loads things to the computer before I even get to pick where the OS is to be installed I get BSOD. Any ideas?

    Hi epidemic welcome to D-A-L

Could you tell us how you are reformatting (what tool are you using to format the drive) the hard drive?
and could you tell us the make and model of the laptop?

    Jim

Hey jim, thanks for the welcome!
I'm at work right now but the laptop is a dell i can get the rest of the information when I get home.
I originally did a full reformat on the laptop using the windows cd and it went well. I reinstalled the drivers, but when I go to shut/restart the laptop down it hangs and never closes. Now I went back to do another reformat because I thought it could be a bad sector on the HD, but after the window CD loads the system gets blue screen and I cannot even use the windows cd now.

Could get us the full details of the blue screen error message and post it here.
This could be the best clue to what is causing your problem

okay, here is the error message I get:

A problem has been detected and Windows have been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer, If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drive or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0X0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I doubt the computer has any viruses on it since I did a fresh reformat of the whole OS. Oh and I also ran chkdsk by click scan for errors from my computer it make be turn the computer off and then it ran.

Hey Tallin, thanks for the reply! But that first link seems very promising it recommends:

    1. On start up (Dell logo), press F2 to enter BIOS

    2. Expand the "Drives" section

    3. Go to "SATA Operation"

    4. Change this from "RAID Auto/AHCI" to "RAID Auto/ATA"
But in the bios I do not see anything about drives or SATA Operation.. makes me wonder if the installation skipped something.

Did you research the second link -

Can you run SFCScannow to make sure you have no corrupt or missing .dll files. Insert your OS CD before you follow the link.

    kind regards,
