Yeah, I'm reading the second link now and going to try SFC
I ran sfc.exe sfc /scannow the windows file protection window came up so I inserted the XP cd and then the scan started. The scan went through and nothing nothing came up on the window I assume it found nothing?
I really don't have any other answer for you than following the step by step to do either the repair or re-install below.
Do you have the bootable setup CD for the OS you are running?
I am talking about, example a WinXP Setup CD.
If you do....
These are the 2 Windows Setup CD Repair Options:
REPAIR CONSOLE:
1.Boot to your WinXP Setup CD
2.At the 1st window with the Repair option on the bottom Statusbar, use that to open the Repair Console
3.When you get to the Repair Console's Command Prompt enter CHKDSK C: /R (the R is not a typo)
4.Let CHKDSK do its thing, then reboot
Also, running CHKDSK from the desktop (via Start menu, Accessories, Command Prompt) by entering CHKDSK C: /F (the F is not a typo), occasionally. This should be part of your general system maintenance routine. Note that this will require a reboot to actually run.
REPAIR REINSTALL:
Please do this:
1.Boot to your WinXP Setup CD
2.At the 1st window with Repair listed in the bottom Statusbar, select to install (skip first Repair option)
3.Setup should show you C:\Windows (you have Windows already installed) and you'll get a window with a 2nd Repair listed in the bottom Statusbar, use this to start a Recovery Reinstall.
A Repair Reinstall will reinstall all the original system files but leave your hardware configuration your applications as is.
NOTE, you will have to redo ALL Win Updates. Highly suggest you, use [Custom] Mode, and only install 3 to 5 at a time:
1. Do ALL Service Packs (SP) last and one at a time
2. For all other updates, De-Select ALL
3. Select the first 3 to 5 updates
4. Download and install
5. IF all install correctly, REBOOT asked to or not
6. Repeat until all updates are installed (now do any remaining SPs)
WARNING: If you have installed SP3, this makes your original WinXP Setup CD useless unless you have a slipstreamed version of your entire Os.
Keep us posted,
kind regards,
Well the blue screen comes up after I boot into the xp cd and the set up starts loading the drivers. After it loads the drivers before it gives you set up options I get the blue screen. I dont know if I'm explaining this well.
Which option are you choosing to do?
Tell me exactly what OS CD you are using please?
Let me know the answers to the above, but I think it is time you seek out a family IT shop near you for professional advice regarding your issue. That would be my advice - a hands on is needed here and is so much more fruitful as I have exhausted all options I dare advise you at this time.....sorry.
kind regards,
XP pro. I just put the cd in and let it boo but then I get the blue screen.
Have you check all the options here Advanced troubleshooting for "Stop 0x0000007B" errors in Windows XP
The first one a Boot Sector Virus needs to be ruled out.
Avira have free tool called AntiVir Rescue System found here Avira AntiVir Rescue System
You need to down load it on clean machine then burn it to a CD/DVD
Then use it to boot your PC
How to use the Rescue Disk can be found here

I don't think its a boot sector virus, because I just reformatted that computer and then the problems of hanging shut down appeared. I then decided to re-reformat but then as I boot into the cd I get a blue screen.
Download and run DBAN (Darick's Boot And Nuke). Use the iso to create a bootable CD. Boot it and when you get to the input stage, enter autonuke. Let it run for a few minutes to make sure the MBR and Partition Table is wiped. This will make the drive a raw, unformatted drive.
Now boot the XP CD and create a partition then select it to install to. The XP install will format it for you.
See if that resolves the problem. It has for me on several computers. Also, if there is a boot sector virus this will get rid of it.
Note: ImgBurn does a good job of burning CDs from iso images.
