Very unusual internet issue
Hello. I'm new to this forum. I came here to resolve an annoying problem I have at hand. The computer I use is a laptop, and I usually use WLAN to connect to the internet (I am as I type this). A few minute ago, I was downloading a big download and thought that I wanted to download it faster. So, I decided to connect to the LAN.
I plugged in my ethernet cable to my laptop, and I see that LAN is connecting. Satisfied with myself, I look at my download... and am surprised that it completely stopped! The internet wasn't working. I checked my LAN, and the laptop said it was connecting, but the "received" packets were only a few. I tried to go on the internet. That didn't work. As I scratch my head, I decided to plug out and in again my router and modem. It didn't work.
Now one fact that utterly confuses me is that my laptop decides to use my WLAN over my LAN, a setting I had not configured (I don't even know how to do that). Also, my WLAN icon shows up on my taskbar, but not my LAN. Wierd. I decided to disable my WLAN while using my LAN, as the laptop chooses to use my WLAN over my LAN.
Another fact is that when I enabled my WLAN to get on the internet, it connected without any problems. I've heard of people not having WLAN connection while having LAN connection, but in my case, I have WLAN connection but not my LAN connection!
I known as a tech geek by my friends, and definitely know more about PCs than the avarage joe, but this problem leaves me stumped. I specialize in antimalware, not networking, so I don't know much about IP, DNS, etc....
My router is a linksys wireless-g broadband router, model WRT54GS. I am using windows xp home edition. I have service pack 3. If you need any more info, please feel free to ask.
Thank you in advance.
Edit: Something I forgot to say, there is a desktop sharing the same router and using LAN, but that computer has no problems with it.
Edit: It has mysteriously solved itself. Now it works. Admins, please close this thread. I'll ask to open it if it occurs again. Thank you.
