I was closing some programs out and it seems it was taking a long time in doing that, so I powered off the laptop I was using and when I powered it back on, I received "Missing operating system". I am using XP Pro on (HP) Compaq nx6110. What can I do??
Can you find the key to change boot order in bios and make sure hard drive is first drive selected to boot?
If Hardrive is 1st on boot order, Then check and see if bios recognizes and sees your MODEL or Name of Hardrive (like Hitachi,Seagate).
If the hardrive has failed completely. You can run your computer off a Linux Live CD or React OS Live CD till you replace Hardrive. You can use either CD I think to try and pull files off (if possible) to USB Drive also.
Edit:How. By a hard reset? I would do the bios checklist first and try a reboot. then do a F8. Then select Last known good configuration option.so I powered off the laptop

Thank you for the assistance, but it won't allow me to do an F8, only and F10 which is checking the setup.
So checking the setup. Was your hardrive seen and recognized and was first boot device in boot order?
If this is going to be a Windows issue, I probably won't be any help. Somebody that runs Windows will have tp chime in. Normally Operating system not found is a Bios boot order or roached Hardrive issue. Unless MBR got pooched when you did a hard shutdown. Then you will need to do a "fix mbr"
Microsoft Corporation
You are going to have to get into BIOS Setup on your computer to set the CD/DVD drive as the first bootable device, so you can then boot your XP CD.
How you do this varies with each manufacturer. Normally you press F1, F2, F10 or Del when you see the manufacturers logo. Often there is a clue somewhere on the screen when you boot normally telling you what key to press.
If you don't have an XP CD, download and create a bootable CD from the .iso file XP Recovery Console
You don't burn the iso file itself to CD., you create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software. There is a good freeware burner called ImgBurn which will
do this.
Boot the CD and at the first opportunity, enter R to start the Recovery Console.
Next, choose which XP installation you want to login to. Normally this will be 1.
Lastly you will be asked for the Administrator password. Just press the Enter key as the Administrator does not have a password (unless you gave it one, then you would enter it).
From the command prompt, enter: chkdsk c: /r
Allow it to complete undisturbed. It can take an hour or more depending on the size of the hard drive.
Remove the CD, type exit and the computer will reboot. Hopefully that will have fixed the problem (corrupted file system).
