No sound issue
You may remember that I posted a Q about a computer crash that I had recently. I had originally just put the computer into “Safeboot” mode by ‘sysconfig’ and it eventually quit working altogether. SO… that was the past problem, now I’ve got a completely different one. My hard drive was, in fact, lost from the crash and I had it reformatted and some of my information was saved. I got my computer back yesterday and the sound doesn’t work now, at all, nothing. I’ve tried the windows help and troubleshooting steps except for the BIOS stuff, because I’m afraid to mess it up again.
My speakers work fine because I hooked them to my laptop to check them and the guy said he put in a new sound card when he had my computer. Device manager shows no problem and the properties say that the Realtek hardware is working properly and enabled. I’ve uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled.
I was wondering if the problem is from installing Windows XP Professional when I originally had XP. I have no idea what to try next, any help would be appreciated.

Hi mkaye
Could you gives us some details on your motherboard ie: Make and model number
also Make and model number of sound card
If its easier you could do the D-A_L hardware scan found here http://www.d-a-l.com/hardwarescan/

...
Motherboard Manufacturer: ASUSTek Computer INC., Model: NAGAMI2L (v2.00)
Realtek High Definition Audio = Sound device
-
I'm slightly puzzled you say your sound card is Realtek High Definition Audio = Sound device
But if the guy said he put in a new sound card
What is the name of the sound card he fitted?
According to ASUS motherboard Model: NAGAMI2L (v2.00) spec
Here: Motherboard Specifications, A8N-LA (Nagami2) HP Pavilion Media Center a1520n Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
The sound card is a onboard card Realtek ALC883 8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC
1) Are sure he fitted a new card?
2) If he did do you know if the onboard card was disable in Bios?

Wow, you aren't the only one confused, but I was already confused to begin with
No, I'm not sure that he fitted a new card, it's just what he said to the ex-husband... he may have just been talking about the onboard one on the motherboard, idk.
As far as the BIOS, I have no idea.
Geez, I'm not very helpful, sorry

Could you go to the link below and do a hardware scan
Hardware Scan | D-A-L Computer Help
When its complete copy the link at the top of the page
and post it here so we can check and make sure what exactly is on your PC

... I guess I didn't know that you needed the link, I did that scan a bit ago when you asked about the motherboard... here it is:
D-A-L Computer Hardware Scan Results

The hardware scan doesn't suggest a sound card is fitted could you first check
on the back of the PC to see if there's an additional set of audio connectors or just
the ones set that's always been there

I think it looks the same as it did before.
-
If there are no additional connectors then I don't think a sound card as been fitted.
Because the Presario sound card is incorporated with the motherboard.
Can you go the the Compaq sound trouble shooting guide in the link below.
No sound in Windows 98, ME, and XP Compaq Presario Media Center SR1910NX Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
This will ensure everything it set up correctly and (if there are no problems with sound card) should get your sound working.
If you don't understand or need any assistance with anything in the guide please post back
