I am having a problem trying to load files of any size into my computer using USB 2.0.
Not sure of the maximum size of file that will work, certainly a video file will crash the machine, whilst an average .jpg would be OK.
The symptom is that if I try to load a file from and external device (SD card, Camcorder etc) then if the file is fairly large then the computer simply freezes. The only way to get it to start is to hit the restart button. Ctrl+Alt+Del don't work as the machine is completely frozen.
Xp Sp3, ver 2002
AMD Athlon 4400+ 2.21GHZ 2GB RAM
Is there possibly and updated driver that I can install?
I note that in Device manager all USB controllers apear to working OK, I have six controllers:
1. Standard Enhabnced PCI to USB Host Controller
2. Standard OpenHCD USB to Host controller
3. USB Composite Device
4. USB Mass Storage Device
5. USB Root Hub
6. .USB Root Hub
When next loading a large file and the PC freezes make a note of the time.
Restart your PC and go to Event Viewer by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Manage.
Click the plus at the side of Event Viewer and look in the Application and System logs.
To see if there are any error relating to your problem at the time your PC froze.
Also right click My Computer select Properties then select the Advanced tab.
Select Settings button under Startup and Recovery and untick the box
Automatically restart.
Doing this may gives a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) error message when the PC freezes.
If it does post the Full error message here so we can trouble shoot it.
Many thanks Jim, may I wish you a very happy new year,
I tried what you said, but I am not sure that the results are useful.
I am attaching two images of the results.
What I did was to start the adjust tiem/date function so that when the computer locked up I would have an accurate record of the time (I tried a couple of times without this but could not be sure of the precise time in terms of the computer clock, you will see why later).
The lock-up time for the example I have posted was exactly 10:40:39 and 39% of a large file had been copied from my camcorder (1.122GB).
When I looked in both the Application and System events the time jumps from 10:36:55 to 10:43:48 (it was this effect that caught me out in my first attempts to measure the time of the crash).
I have included the Event Properties for the system warning at 10:43:56, not sure why I included the event for the application event at 10:36:55, but I do not know what I am looking for.
I have tried reading all the Event Properties +/- the crash time, but I cannnot understand whether they are significant or not (I find the language very arcane).
I did not get the BSOD, I replicated this process several times and did note that the size of file copied prior to locking-up does vary considerable between 116MB to 2.2GB.
Not sure what to do next.
Kind regards, and thanks again.

Microsoft say Any computer that is to be included in the browse list must also have File and Print Sharing enabled.
the work around is : -
To work around this problem, enable File and Printer Sharing on Windows domain controllers and any computer that is listed in the browse list.
Can you check to see if File and Printer Sharing are enabled.
I have checked that File and Print Sharing is enabled (note I use a wireless connection around the house so don't have any wired network connections).
Not sure if this will help sorting out the USB/Large File problem.
I was planning an external HDD as a file back-up but this will not work because of this (instead I have gone for a SATA caddy and an additional 1.5TB HDD as my external back-up - which works fine) but I still cannot download large files from SD, Compact Flash or my Camcorder.
Kind regards
Martin

Reason: Typos
When you say " I still cannot download large files from SD, Compact Flash or my Camcorder."
Do you mean when you transferring files from your SD, Compact Flash or Camcorder
via a direct connection to a single PC the PC freezes?
Because when you are transferring files its not just windows working your AntiVirus is checking each file also.
So could you go into Task manager (press control/alt/delete) select the process tab
and check what is using you CPU when your PC is standing idle.
could you also tell us how many processes are running there and if they are constantly using CPU.
Is there plenty of free space on the drive your transferring the files to.
You have plenty of ram but could you check what your virtual memory is set to.
By right clicking My Computer select Properties/Advanced tab then select settings button
and Advanced tab and under Virtual memory select change in that window is the
custom size or system managed size radio button selected.
If custom size is selected what are the initial size and maximum size set to.
Make no changes there yet just cancel and leave.
If the problem is transferring files directly from you camcoder to your PC could you try going into
safe mode and see if the problem still persists.
Now select BOOT.INI tab and tick the box SAFEBOOT
Click Apply and OK then restart your PC and see if you can now transfer
the files now.
When you've tried that you can revert the changes by going back into
msconfig and on the General tab select the radio button Normal Startup
Apply and restart.
Sorry Jim I only have tabs for General, SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, Services, Startup, and Tools
(Windows Xp)
I selected Diagnostic Startup from the radio butttons in the General tab. Restarted and tried to load a video file from the Camcorder this time it just managed 18% of the file before freezing. I have now just changed back to normal startup.
Kind regards
Martin

Reason: comments after restart
