    Hi Martin

    Hi Jim and Ztruker

Thank you for all your help. I am still having a problem because the machine keeps crashing when trying to download video files. This is all a bit complicated as I wish to use the Sony PMB Utility that came with my camera. If I use the PMB the video files are saved in the .mt2s format and can be played by several video viewers. If I drill down into the camera and save the video files directly they are saved as .mts file that I can only get the Nero viewer to open.

To side-step this I thought that I could use my eSATA docking station to connect to my laptop, as it also has a USB connector. Then I could save all the files to a SATA HDD, reconnect to my desktop machine and I will have captured my video!

Now, the big problem is that when I try to load the Sony software on my laptop I get the error message: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more details". I tried to find out what this means and it seems to me that there is no clear understanding.

Lots of words about Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable that don't mean a thing to me.

Should I start a new thread?

It might be because my laptop very rarely seems to download a MS Update successfully. I don't want to overstay my welcome on this forum but I now seem to have a catch 22 situation.

    Kind regards

    Martin

    Hi Martin

When it says " Please see the application event log for more details"

Have you been My Computer/Manage and in the Event Viewer under Application

Is there any errors there relating to your problem

    Hi Jim,

A complete column of errors, (note this is on my laptop which runs Vista Ultimate).

I have always been very protective with my laptop and only load cast iron software and always keep firewalls and AV software up to date.

The computer has always had a problem trying to upload MS updates, sometime they are successful but more often than not they fail.

I think this problem may have something to do with .dll's and C++, but searching Google produces a whole array of confusing views!

Sony Picture Utility is the only application that produces this error.

    Kind regards

    Hi Martin

If you have a host of errors on your laptop I think the best place to start is to ensure your system
    file are in good order.

To do this we need to run System File Checker (SFC)

You will need an XP installation CD/DVD for this

A guide to this can be found here scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker)

Go to run and type sfc /scannow

Allow this to run (it will take sometime) and when complete there will be no report.

But should it find faulty system file it will repair them.

Once this is complete open Internet Explorer (not firefox or any other browser) and go to

    Microsoft Update

If you have not been here before you will have to Validate your Windows XP follow the Validation instructions which are quite easy.

Once the page as loaded click on the Custom button

Microsoft will search for any updates available for your PC

Once completed it will give you a list of any updates available. Download and install
any Updates marked as High Priority.

If any fail to install restart your PC in Safemode with Networking go back to the above link
and try to install them from there.

    Hi Jim,

Please tell me if I am overstaying my welcome, or if I ought to start a new thread. As I am deviating from the original topic.

My laptop OS is Vista Ultimate, the problem with the updates is that they usually fail. They appear to download OK but then fail. I have tried to understand the MS help but always I seem to end up with a circular argument that eventually tells me to check for upgrades (again!!!), which is what I did in the first place - so hardly any help at all!

Very often when I swich off mt laptop it tells me to wait whilst updates are downloaded and run, this process often takes a long time, but almost invariably when I check I am told the download has failed. I enclose two screen shots, the first shows a stream of failed updates, whilst the second shows that osscasionally the updates are (rarely) successful.

Specifically I notice that the update KB973923 has failed and thaqt this relates to MS Visual C++ 2005 service pack 1, which some pundits seem to think can be responsible for the side-by-side error that I get when I try to run the Sony Picture Utility.

    Kind regards

    Hi Martin

The answer to your Question "Please tell me if I am overstaying my welcome"

    Is No.
We are Happy to help for as long it is necessary to get to the bottom of the problem.

But I do think you should start a New thread in the Vista Forum

Because anyone looking for answers to the XP USB File problem will wonder why we are
    talking about Vista updates.

My first question on the Updates is

    1) Have you tried going Safemode With Networking to do the Updates?
    2) Have you tried downloading the Updates from Microsoft and installing them
instead of using the Update tool?

Many thanks for that Jim, I will restart this derived topic in the Vista forum.

    To answer your questions:

"1) Have you tried going Safemode With Networking to do the Updates?
    2) Have you tried downloading the Updates from Microsoft and installing them
instead of using the Update tool?"

The answer to 1) is no and I will try that now.

The second one is more difficult as I have tried this but seem always to get referred back by the MS help to "Click to open Windows Updates" and I know tha tif I check for udates then nothing significant happens, except that if I click "View update history then" I just get the list of failures. All pretty unhelpful really.

I am reposting this in the Vista Forum

    Kind regards

    Martin
