"Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted"

Hi, so i shut my computer down before work today because we were getting a new shaw modem put in. when I got home I turned it back on and put my password in and this message popped up "Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted" I said ok because that was my only option, let my computer finish loading (was VERY slow). Once all was loaded I wend and did a system restore to yesterday (Dec 28th) and let it do it's thing. The computer will now not go past the Black Windows XP loading screen with the animated loading bar. It wont even get passed this point in Safe Mode. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I'm Running Windows XP Media Center with all of the latest updates if that helps.

    Thanks
    Matt

    Hi Matt

When you press F8 and get to the Windows Advanced Options menu

Have you tried selecting Last Known Good Configuration?

If you have a corrupted account (user profile) where things are all messed up when you login or you can't login then follow the directions here to create a new account and copy all your user data over to it:

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP

Or follow these directions posted in GeeksToGo.com
    • Boot to Safe Mode, login as Administrator
    • Show hidden files by opening My Computer, Tools menu, View tab, check Show Hidden Files/Folders and uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes. Click Apply then OK.
    • Create a new Administrator level account via Control Panel / User Accounts.. Pick a good name as you will be keeping it.
    • Reboot the computer.
    • Login with the new account so the folder structure under Documents and Settings gets created, then log off.
    • Boot to Safe Mode, login as Administrator
    • Browse to c:\documents and settings\OldUserAccount
    • Select everything in that folder except the three files called ntuser.dat, ntuser.dat.log, and ntuser.ini.
    • Copy all those files into c:\documents and settings\NewUserAccount. Reply Yes or Yes to all when duplicate folders or files are found.
    • Reboot the computer and login with your New user account.
Once you confirm that all your documents are located in My Documents of the New user, you can delete the old profile.[/list]

That would work great, but ever since trying to do a restore the computer will NOT boot past the windows loading screen. It will sit on that loading screen for about 10 mins then reboot and do that again untell I turn the computer off

One final attemp press F8 and get to the Windows Advanced Options menu

Now select Safe Mode with Command Prompt

If you can get into this at the command prompt type chkdsk /f

Note the space between k /

Post back if this successful. if not then follow instructions below

If this option is not available could you tell us if you access to a XP installation disk

either your own Xp installation disk or a friends.

Because I'm going to suggest a repair installation of your system.

Information on how to do this option is to be found here : -

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

Follow these instructions carefully because failure to do this will result in a new
installation of Windows and loss of files and not repair of your system.

Well when I tell it to boot into safe mode with command prompt it starts to boot and displays line and lines of text then stops hangs there for a little bit and restarts. So it looks like im going to have to do a Repair Install of windows. Now should I just a XP disk or my Media Center Disk to do this?

Well I tried doing the repair followed all the instructions and it didn't work. Looks like I'm going to have to format and start all over again. I wonder if the hard drive could be dieing and causing me all these problems?

    Happy New Year All

What happened when you did the Repair Install? Same error on boot or did the install itself fail?
