Ive been having problems with my pc, it started occasionaly when using Firefox, now it has now started when in normal windows or if using I.E
My mouse cursor either goes jumpy when moving the mouse or it simply freezes on the spot on screen.
Sometimes it will carry on like this or when it freezes, you have to manualy re-start the machine by using the windows key and arrow buttons.
Ive just been through the machine on the spyware/adware/virus part of the forum with Bronis kind help and cleansed my machine of all nasty related things, but Im still getting the same problem.
Im also getting problems when using I.E, if I go to open a secondary explorer window from a link or favourites, the secondary screen sometimes remains white whilst connecting up, but the screen will not connect. Instead of responding with unable to connect, it will stay in this state for as long as you allow it. If you try to open a third page simultainously(sp) this will normaly connect up straight away.
Any help would be welcomed.
Please provide your hardware and Windows version information.
How much free disk space do you have?
What do you mean by "normal windows"?Ive been having problems with my pc, it started occasionaly when using Firefox, now it has now started when in normal windows or if using I.E
The vast majority of IE problems are the result of add-ons misbehaving, or conflicting with other add-ons. Depending on your version, you can run without add-ons. Or better yet, you can reset IE under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced, then click Reset. This will remove all your add-ons, so if you have any you really like, you will have to reinstall them later.
Are your problems only while accessing the Internet?
OK, I hope this is what your after, Im running:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
Compaq Presario
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.80GHz 2.00 GB of RAM
Memory:
PRESARIO(C)
Type local disk
file system NTFS
Used 57,687,232,512 bytes 53.7 GB
Free 58,364,690,432 bytes 54.3 GB

When I referred to normal windows, I ment when using files/desk top etc( not using either Firefox or Internet explorer)
Ive had problems whilst using the internet and whilst using the pc offline, ie using paint shop pro, browsing files/desktop etc.
Ive also now reset all IE add ons as instructed.
Well it looks like you have plenty of free disk space on C drive. D drive has very little but I am going to assume that's a recovery partition or memory stick and not something you are actively using.
2Gb of RAM is a decent amount.
Since it happens with paint shop and while using Windows Explorer, we can rule out your browsers and Internet connection.
If Broni helped you clean your machine, then I have confidence it is clean. But since your statement seems to indicate "nasties" were found, that could suggest those nasties left some damage behind. Or it could be something unrelated that's failing.
Do you know what your temperatures are? Has the system been cleaned of heat trapping dust and dirt? Any errors showing in Device Manager?
OK, in the device manager, If I manualy scroll through each piece of hardware, I get " This device is working messages" for everything except the following.
Direct Memory access controller - No driver installed.
Intel(R)82801EB SMBus Controller-24D3 - No driver installed.
Motherboard resources-system devices on Intel(R) 82801EB LPC interface controller - no driver installed ( three enteries).
Numeric data processor - No driver installed.
Programable interrupt controller - No driver installed.
System board on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant systems - No driver installed.
System timer on Intel(R) 82801EB LPC interface controller - No driver installed.
I have reccently given the tower a good clean out/blown it through, this was after the problem had started.
The machine is also in a pretty ' airy' location, I did have it running for a few hours with the side cover removed and it played up when in this state also.
Try this;
Intel® Driver Update Utility
Ive updated drivers, as best as I can manage anyway.
My mouse/cursor still seems a bit sketchy when using firefox, which has all the latest updates, but other than that it seems fine.
Guess thats case resolved!
Cheers chaps.![]()
Try these as well;
A good (free) "cleaner" for removing junk from your system is CCleaner. It also performs a "clean-up" pass on the registry.
CCleaner - Download
(Click on Download from FileHippo......, in the PayPal box)
When the next window opens, click "Download Latest Version" on the right of the page.
Alternate Download;
|MG| CCleaner Slim 2.26.1050 Download
Once you download and install it, open the program then click on (left hand side) OPTIONS, then COOKIES. Any cookies you want to save (trusted sites, places you have usernames/passwords), highlight them in the left column, then (using the directional arrows between the panes), move them to the right hand column under "Cookies to keep".
Still under Options, click on Advanced. Remove the check mark from the box for "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
Leave all other settings at the default.
Then click on Cleaner (on the top left). When that window opens, click on Run Cleaner (bottom right of the window.)
When it finishes, close CCleaner, and restart your machine. (Some files will not be deleted until a restart is performed.)
I do not advocate running CCleaner on each boot. I run it once or twice a week.
AND.....
RegSeeker
Open it, click on Clean The Registry, then OK.
Once it's finished, along the bottom of the screen, (near the operation progress bar) click on Select, choose "Select All". Then click on Action, then "Delete selected items".
All deleted items will be backed up, just click OK for the default backup filenames/locations.
Close the program and restart the machine.
NOTE: This is a powerful tool. It has many other settings/tools/tweaks. Use more than what is mentioned above at your own volition/risk.
A couple, err, 5 notes about CCleaner (one of my favorite utilities).
A couple (or at least that's when I first noticed it) version updates back, they changed the setting to "...older than 24 hours".
I always run CCleaner's registry cleaner 3 times as typically after the first, it finds a couple more entries. The 3rd time is just to be sure and is almost always clean.
If you have not used a temporary file cleaner in a while, then determining which cookies to keep can be daunting. You might want to just delete them all but make sure you know your user names and passwords first. Then visit and login to your favorite sites. Then you can check the much smaller Cookies to keep list and more easily sort out those you want to keep during future cleanings. And note if you use another cleaner after that, those saved cookies will be deleted.
Some files cannot be deleted while Windows is running so CCleaner marks those files for deletion during the next boot. This means the next boot may take longer than expected. Subsequent boot times should return to normal.
Finally, when using the registry cleaner (any registry cleaner), make sure you follow the prompts to backup the registry first. Although CCleaner has never let me down, modifying the registry always comes with risks.
Isn't this, err, covered, in my post (with the exception of running CCleaner three times (???, never had to myself) and the change from "48 hours" to "24 hours")?
