    PC keeps freezing

My computer keeps freezing, the mouse 's light is still on and the keyboard lights are still on too, but the screen just freezes. When the screen goes onto standby, there is no way to get the computer back on other then turn it off by the tower, as opposed to normally just moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard. Sorry this is very vague and not explained very well. I am not very computer technical either so as much help would be appreciated. Thanks very much for all help in advance. Cheers, Rob.

Sorry just re-reading it, it is more like my computer keeps crashing not freezing. Sorry. Many thanks in advance.

    Hi robbieb

When the PC freezes have you tried pressing the control/halt/delete key combination.
To see if you can bring up Task Manager.
If you can access Task Manager it will tell you which program is Not responding or using your cpu

Microsoft have a How to troubleshooting hibernation and standby here How to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP

    Hope it helps

Apart from checking the advice listed in the link to Microsoft help.

If Right click on My Computer and select Manage
In that window click on the + Beside Event viewer
You now have a list of event logs
You can look in these to see if there are any errors listed around the time of your problem.

In particular look in Application, System and Windows PowerShell
to see if there are any errors listed around the time your problem occured.
If there are post full error message of it or them here
So we can advise on whether its the cause of this problem

There are windows update error in there do you have all the service packs installed

Go to Windows Updates here Microsoft Update

And check if you have all the latest High priority updates You will need to use Internet Explorer 6 or higher for this
This could also occur if your PC time is wrong. Check your time you could have the right time but wrong year.
EventID.Net found here Event ID 1003 Source System
    Says : -
Most of the problems leading to this event indicate faulty hardware, bugs in device drivers or incompatible hardware.
What do you use to wake up your PC mouse or keyboard the drivers for either of those could be faulty.

We can also check your system files to ensure you nothing there causing the problem.
The tool for this is SFC scannow
How to on this is found here scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker)

It will take some time to check all the system files so do it when you don't need to use your PC

I have the latest service pack and I looked at the website you gave me and it says there are no updates that i need to download. The time and date is correct on my computer aswell. I do not think the drivers for my keyboard or mouse are faulty as they work fine when the computer is working fine. Sometimes my computer crashes when it is starting up so it is just random. If i am working on my computer it is fine but when i leave it for a bit it then crashes and i have to turn it off and back on again by the tower bit. What would checking my system files do for me? It says i need to load up my XP disk, will that lose any of my files and documents and applications etc? Thanks again for all your help so far, sorry i am not very good at explaining. Hope to hear from you soon, Rob.

If you check the system files you ensure that none of them are corrupted and causing the crash.
You will not lose any of your files or documents or applications with the SFC process.
All this does is search the Windows System Files and repairs any that are faulty.
If your PC keeps crashing and you don't get a BSOD
You need to enable this to see what is causing the crash.
If you right click My Computer and select properties
Then in that window select the Advanced tab under the section Startup and Recovery
select the Settings button. In the section System failure untick the box Automatically restart.
When you system crashes you will get a BSOD(Blue Screen of Death)
Make note of the full error message and post it here.
You will then have to manually restart your PC by pressing the power button (not to hard)
To turn it . Then restart your PC.
With that error message we will be able to ascertain the cause of your crashes.
