I've used a number of reg cleaners none have ever cause me a problem.
I wish I could say the same. If not for backing up first (thanks to ERUNT), there have been a couple times where I would have been hosed. But in each of those cases (this was years ago), the machines were at least 2 years old and had gone through several evolutions of hardware, OS updates and patches, and major application changes. And in each of those cases, I was attempting with great difficulty, but ultimately succeeding, to rid the systems, once and for all, of every trace of any Norton/Symantec product.
I use the one that comes with CCleaner at the moment. But I always do a backup.
CCleaner's is the least aggressive of all the cleaners and, therefore, is my favorite. Plus, it always prompts to backup first. I note several cleaners (and some reviews too) boast about the number of items it finds as proof of superiority - but those are false claims. A line that does nothing, hurts nothing so leaving it there causes no harm. It that aggressiveness that can cause problems.

The main point here is...
If you want to touch the registry, you better know what you're doing.
I agree 100%. And if not sure, just leave it.
The first rule...Is Back It Up.
and 200% for that.
