hello all, i have just had to completely reinstall windows due to not being able to get past the blue screen of death. when it has loaded i cannot connect to the internet. after looking around the web for advice i found out that i have some missing drivers by going to control panel>administrater tools> computer management>device manager.
i am missing the following things... ethernet controller, pci device, sm bus controller, universal serial bus usb controller and video controller vga compatible.
i have speant alot of time looking for these drivers but dont know which is the right one or even what i should be looking for, and for a novice like me it is really really frustrating. my computer is a dell dimension 3100 but the model might be a dv051. my service tag is 8bvsh2j. i have looked on the dell site which is where i was advised to try and have also sent them an email after not being able to get through on the phone. i was just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or knows how to solve it? also if somebody knows where to find these drivers i would appreciate it a lot! any input would be great. thanks, andy
To get a detailed report of all your (recognized) machines hardware;
Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare)
Once it's finished loading and running, click on the Report Wizard in the Menu Bar. Save all hardware related pages (the default) to a TEXT file. (It will save it to C:\Program Files\Lavalys\EVEREST Home Edition\Reports by default, unless you redirect it.)
Compress (zip) the Everest Report text file and attach that zipped text document to your next posting. (When posting, click on Advanced, and just below the posting box you'll see "Additional Options", and within that, "Attach Files". Click on "Manage Attachments" and follow the prompts. Browse to the file and choose UPLOAD.)
and also yes i did try the drivers and downloads page but i couldnt find anything that looked like it matched what i was looking for, certainly didnt mention an ethernet driver. i managed to get through to dell on the phone but after 20 minutes on hold they told me it would cost straight up £30 to fix and i asked her what they would do and she was very reluctant to tell me so and refused to do anything else unless i payed up. i was quite insulted after recieving an email back telling me how much they care and want to fix my problem, so i just hung up. if there is no other way to get the drivers that is my absolute last resort but would love it if i didnt have to do any more business with dell. cheerz
i downloaded the chipset driver and put in on a usb to try on my computer (im using a freinds) but it gave me the option to find appropriate service on the web or choose program from a list but the list comprises of things like word and paint so i dont think thats right. it seems to work on this computer ( my freinds) but doesnt on mine. any suggestions?
just tried copy it to a disk instead of usb but same result. what it says is that windows cannot open this file as it does not know what created it....... please select program from a list. grrrr
